Here is a good video of what gastric plication is. What it is basically doing is folding the stomach in on itself without cutting or removing any bit of it as in the gastric sleeve. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold without causing the malabsorbtive issues that come with the removal or re-routing of the stomach contents as it does with the sleeve and/or gastric bypass.

I had the plication with the lap band back in September and have done well with it so far. I have not had a fill as of yet and some say it is due to the added plication. I was lucky and did not experience "bandster hell" as many experience until their band is filled to a good level, also some say due to the plication. But even with plication it is different. I know a terrific gal who also had the same surgery as myself but experienced "bandster hell" hunger from the very beginning and has had several fills and is now feeling as though she is in the green zone :D ...so it is a very different experience for many.

So far so good...one day at a time is my motto these days!! :)

lynn, many doctors are still performing plication surgery as part of the lapband surgery and independently by itself. The plication surgery in the US has been in "study" phase and at this point the data is being reconciled for FDA approval, so this could be why the doctor you found has stopped doing them, he may have all the data he needed and is now waiting on the next phase before moving ahead.

I would give them a call, and inquire just to see what you learn and if there are any other doctors in the area who might still be working with the plication.

I am in Washington and had the plication surgery (without band) as part of a study in October 2013 and have lost 88 pounds so far. My only regret is that I didn't have it sooner. This surgery was great for me, but as it is still considered investigational and generally done as part of a study, insurance will not cover this type of WLS. Since I was self pay I chose this because the method of surgery sounded safe to me and it was least expensive as my doctor was providing the aftercare for free if you were willing to participate in the study. That saved me about $5 or $6k off the cost of what a sleeve would have been.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I am a band to sleeve patient now but had never heard of this procedure. Thanks again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
