Can you get too much protein?

Recommended Posts

Yeah me again.. the high Protein, low carb thing quit working and now I'm gaining about a lb a day! I know I kicked the protein up a notch. I am running between 15 - 22 carbs a day with 100 - 130 protein. Could I be gaining weight because I'm getting too many protein? Trying to figure out why I was losing so good on it and now I'm gaining it all back.

With Protein also comes fat. It might be the type of protein you are getting as well. The amount of carbs you are taking in is DEFINITLY less than you should be having. Are you on a really low carb diet? You really shouldn't get less than 60 grams a day of healthy carbs. Otherwise, your body can be thrown into ketosis. Ketosis can wreak havoc on you. Look it up on the internet but make sure you get info from a reliable source. Diets such as Atkins praise ketosis- but it can lead to a lot of problems.

I do log everything on fitday.com (I never break 1000 calories). I started out with 20-25 carbs and 90ish Protein and lost weight fast! I was extatic as I started losing weight for the first time in months... but I think I OD'd on Protein and got really sick and headachy and now I've gained it all back (well, all the weight I lost on the low carb thing).

I'm just desperate to figure out what MY body needs to lose weight! I've tried a low carb diet, a low fat diet, a low calorie (<600) diet and I do lose weight on all of them... then it all comes right back. If I don't diet I maintain UGH so frustrating! Course, I got this band so I could stop dieting but I was under the false impression that if you followed the bandster rules that you'd lose weight... boy was I wrong.

Maybe this will help...it is a link to a doctor in Kansas City who explains everything! The information you are wanting is towards the back pages.

"First Year - the operation pretty much does all of the work for you. This means you will lose weight almost in spite of yourself"

Now THAT is depressing hehe, what if you can't seem to lose weight after 6 months? That means in June everything will get twice as hard when it's already not happening.

Thanks for the info though! I'm going to read and re-read and see if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong.

prbBrooksie: THANKS for the link.. I printed it off, and I for one am a HUGE believer in a LowCarb diet... my problem is maintaining it...

For ME... I have to eat about 20-30 carbs a day to lose weight, but I

have a HYPOthyroid, and PCOS. Even with my docs pre-op, I'm choosing the Lower Carb options.

I have started my pre-op TODAY.. so I have a long road.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY!

WOW. The original quote must have been written by someone who's never had a weight problem. It's just not that easy.

I think the original text was written for a bypass patient and edited for LapBand.....

23 days until surgery and you are starting the pre-op diet? I wonder why Dr. Malley has you doing this and I did only 2 days worth of liquids before surgery?

I should just do it with you, so I can get a new start on losing weight...I'm glad the information helped. It helped me too. I just have to stay away from junk food.

Kynekke, have you talked to your nutritionist about this? They should be able to give you some ideas about where you're getting hung up. What does your doctor say when you go in for fills? What's your Protein source? Is it liquid or are you actually eating something and if so, what?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
