Upset and saddened with possible news of erosion

Recommended Posts

I was banded only 16 months ago and never really had any issues. The last three months I've been experiencing slight pain in port area, on and off sharp pains where band is connected to my stomach, but nothing serious enough to send me to the doctor. Yesterday, I decided to have a slight un fill due to the fact last week I couldn't even hardly drink or have any solid foods. I sat over two hours talking about the pain I was experiencing with three different nurses before my doctor was able to see me. We did the barium drink, and while he was looking at my results, he said, I need to do a scope to see if your band is possibly eroding. OMG, I was devastated, just devastated. On top of everything, you would think the cost of the scope would be covered in my two year everything paid for plan should something go wrong, but nope, it's 2500.00. I paid 13,000.00 myself and to think its all wasted as he said the band would have to be removed if it was eroding.

I'm just angry, angry that everything I have went through, all the changes I have made in my life, and now, more money, with possibly no band.

I went into the lobby afterwards just thinking things through, when a woman approached me and said you've been here as long as I have are you okay. I told her my story, and she said I'm here too for an eroded band as well. We both had the REALIZE band just over a year. She too, never saw it coming, just experienced slight pain in stomach area. Her band will be removed and her stomach needs repaired at her expense as she self paid and anthem told her that insurance would not cover the band being removed. The cost 12,500.00. So 25,000.00 down the drain for nothing just over a year.

Needed to vent today, sorry, I'm just hurting mentally.

sorry you are stressing so.....but lets not get ahead of ourselves here.

maybe it is NOT what he said.......wait for the results first before you start to think the worse..get the scope, and if need be, a second opinion...hang in there.

The scope is next Thursday. After much research, I chose this doctor due to his experience and he is just a wonderful person and very caring. A second opinion would cost me another high cost figure on top of the 2500.00. He's is one of the best in Ohio for sure. Worst case, he could have said, go home all is good and a year later my stomach would have been a total mess.

Thanks...I'm hoping it's not an erosion. All my previous X-rays after drinking the barium mix always showed a nice flow. This test, the liquid took a L shape and then down, which is why he said the test looked abnormal.

Sounds like it could also be a dilated pouch. Those are much easier and less invasive to deal with.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I will say a prayer for you that it isn't erosion and that there is something else that can be done. Have you sought a second opinion yet? It's certainly worth it. Good luck and keep us posted.

Honestly, this doctor is amazing and my trust has been with him now for almost 1.5 and a second opinion isn't covered and as of now, I still have seven months of free fills and fluoroscopic exams if needed. He actually had surgeries after surgeries yesterday, but found time in between patients to come see me and evaluate me. I also had three nurses before him evaluate me and all three said my fluoroscopic wasn't normal looking. I could tell as well, it didn't look anything like my last five over the year. The barium liquid was think, then hair like thin, then thick again before going into my stomach. It was the portion of the liquid that became so hair like thin that was concerning.

Anyways thanks everyone, I hope others who have had this concern shed some light on their experience with me.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
