How long for approval from BCBS Illinois?

Recommended Posts

I have finished all the prerequisites for the bariatric program and I have my date of March 13th for surgery. My last appointment was this past Friday where they wrote me out scripts for pain meds and a couple other meds to have filled before the surgery. My question is, my surgery is 2 weeks away, I start my preop liquid diet the 28th and my surgeon hasn't submitted to bcbsil for final approval yet! Does anyone out there have bcbsil that was approved so close to surgery? I called the office today and they told me it would be submitted this week. Im just so nervous with my luck that something will happen and Ill get denied or my surgery will get pushed back because the approval is taking too long. This waiting sucks! I already submitted to my work for medical leave/short term disability. Anybody have any input?

BCBS IL already approved me and I haven't even completed by surgeons prerequisites. They're usually pretty quick. If your surgeon is with a "Center of Excellence" the approval should be quick, insurances know they have higher standards and they only submit for those who WILL/DO quality. Trust your surgeon, they know how insurance companies work and how much time they need to allow for approvals.

Bcbs IL did approve the initial request back before I completed everything required like 4 months ago. I am using a center of excellence since that's the rule with bcbs. I guess I'm just being a worry wort. These past couple months haven't been the greatest for me. Trying to stay positive though!

I have bcbs of IL and will be having surgery this summer. I was told by my doctor that bcbs generally does quick approvals especially if you have a bmi over 40.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
