Heads up to those on Beta Blockers....

Recommended Posts

This thread really only applies to anyone with ticker issues......Everyone else can relax.

Turns out one of issues I had after going on a bucket load of meds following a MI and a subsequent cardiac stent, was gaining weight. And it is seems part of the cause is still dogging me post weight loss surgery, in the manner of "slow" losing.

Possible culprit - Beta Blockers. They provide BP and heart rate lowering and stabilize irregular heartbeats. But it seems that along with those cardiac benefits, they also slow metabolism and with the lower heart rate control, make it difficult to attain the weight losing "target heart rates" during exercise. Whoopi.

So, what does all this mean? Bottom line. If you're on Beta Blockers, you're gonna have to work harder to achieve "target heart rates" in order to increase fat burn. Which will of course, make it harder to lose. So without the WLS, I gained and with the sleeve, I lose very slowly.

Thank you life saving Beta Blockers. (Story of my life.) And when I asked my Surgeon about it.....he said.."oh yeah, they do have a tendency to cause slower metabolism. (thanks for the heads up Doc.)

Just thought I'd throw that out there for all of us lucky ones that happen to be stuck taking BBs. I wouldn't be surprised if when I checked, I'd find that most of my other meds have the same type of side effects. <_<

No wonder I'm losing so slowly. I am on Metoprolol. Thanks for the info!

I am on DIltiazem (like Metroprolol). DIltiazem is a Calcium channel blocker, and it keeps my heart rate slow, so I take it at night before bed, since I can't stay awake an hour after taking it. It's nice to know that it's not just my low BMI that is keeping me a slow loser. No matter what, this weight loss thing will help all of us with cardiac issues. (I HOPE!) I have AFib and am sick of the cardioversions. I don't want any more!

Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks , so much for the info. I take it because my heart races and increased blood pressure. . Its not Afib. I'm seeing my cardiologist Wednesday and will see if a lower dosage is prescribed. Getting a bit dizzy as well.

I am on the beta blocker Zebeta (bisoprolol) and it is one of the few beta blockers that don't seem to have an effect on metabolism. I was on metoprolol for a long time and my metabolism slowed way down. As soon as I switched to Zebeta my weight loss kicked up again. I haven't had any issues post-op with slow losing, either. Just a heads up in case you want to stay on beta blockers but might want to try something else. :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
