From what day do you start the 6 month countdown to wait for surgery? Is it from the first Dr. Visit? Do they ever do it a bit earlier than the 6 months? It seems so far away. End of July early August should be my surgery. Unless by some Miracle I get an earlier date.

Hi it depends on your insurance if your first visit is considered your first visit and also I know some people have to wait a couple of months before they can get a surgery date and some get them within a couple of weeks...I guess it could depend your doctor and how busy the practice is..I have not had the surgery yet but I have my hands crossed for early april..Good Luck

Hi Jdillon, welcome to the forum! My insurance required a six month managed plan. I began last June and had my sleeve surgery on 12/23. I did not have to prove or log my diet rather I had to show that I could loose weight over a longer timeframe. So the hospital mixed in monthly meetings with the NUT, exercise physiologist and the psych interview. I lost 42 pounds before surgery.

There is no doubt that the six months dragged on at times. I was ready in month four! But I learned a lot about my issues with food, committing to a structured diet and understanding what it would take to be successful. I tried many Protein powers in an attempt to find what I liked and established a lot of routines that I use today.

Some of the best advice I received from my surgeon was to improve my cardiovascular fitness before surgery. It turned out to be life saving for me and I would highly recommend some exercise while you are getting ready

Good luck on your journey! there is lots of great advice on this forum

I did join a gym and I am going 3x a week minimum. I look forward to every step of the way to learn more about how to improve my knowledge on fitness and nutrition. Thank you for the tips and the comments. I just wish it was a year from now. I feel very lucky to have people like you on here that share what you've learned through your experiences. Thank you

Thank you. My doctor is in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, from what I understand. My insurance requires that I do 6 months supervised weight loss and numerous requirements including sleep study and upper GI and stress test. You're in early April? ! Wow that's great! Good luck to you !

I was so annoyed by that 6 month wait. But I survived. I used the time to work on my psychological relationship with food. Didn't pay much attention to "dieting" until the last month. Lots of therapy and journalling and researching.

Did you lose any weight during your diet? , so far I've stayed the same weight and gained one pound this month.

I lost 10 pounds preop. But all in tiny increments. I did not take it seriously until a month prior. I didn't gain which was a miracle in itself. I am very happy to have used the time productively by working on my compulsive binge behaviour.

Wow! You must be getting excited now? I guess lots of things could happen and end up waiting longer. So far, 5 people from my work have had this surgery with the same doctor, so I am kind of basing it on those experiences. I just hope time flies. I'm ready to start my new life Now. Good luck to you and hope you get your date for your surgery.

I started this process with my first visit with my surgeon 6/24/14. Got my surgery date today, it's 3/14/14. My insurance required 6 months. I waited till 2014 to meet my deductibles. So now I'm covered at 100% with both of my insurances.

I found out from my sleep study I had sleep apnea. That pushed it back a little. I had to get fitted for a cpap. So my process will be 9 months. I could of had it next week, but I planned a mini vaykay with my kids to enjoy my last weekend of carefree eating.

Good idea. I tried to get my sleep study done. Had an 8 o 'clock appointment . Waited till 9 30 and no one showed up. They messed up. That and the NUT appointments and monthly follow up is all I need after Wed when I do my stress test. Congrats on your date! So excited for you!

Of all the preop stuff, getting an appt for the sleep study, scheduling the actual study and then getting the results back was the longest process. Get your appt and study done as soon as you can do it doesn't hold you up when you're at the end

Hello everyone,

I have to wait six months for surgery I was a bit disappointed about the wait, but it will give me time to prepare for the other things the insurance requires.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
