Surgery was in October, now I stay sick...?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery in October of last year, and I've done great! I've lost 80lbs, I had no complications. And I don't think my complications are with my surgery now.... But for about 2 months I've had a fever persistently, that my doctor diagnosed as "fever of unknown origin" I stay weak, and tired. My muscles ache, my head always hurts, I stay nauseated especially in the mornings, (and no I'm absolutely not pregnant). I'm extremely anemic and I have to go get an Iron infusion this week so maybe that will help with the weakness, and some of the other symptoms. But I was just wondering, has anyone else found other health problems as they start losing weight? My surgeons office said it wasn't related to my surgery but I think I may ask my surgeon next appointment.

That sounds scary!! Are they running blood tests etc? I also agree it's probably not directly related (as in, WLS didn't cause this) but whatever is going on, WLS and limited caloric intake may be contributing in some fashion.

I hope they find a diagnosis soon!! At least then you'd know what you're up against.

My best friend is 4 year post op gastric bypass. She is having the same thing.... fever of unknown origin... they did find some kidney stones and blood in her urine but her white cells drop and she becomes anemic requiring Iron infusions. It is a mystery to the docs. She has had a million different consults. She has been worked up for leukemia... rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, lupus.... so far everything has turned up negative. I am frustrated for her because she is a single mom with a toddler and a teen and has a stressful job. I wish these docs would figure out what is going on with her already.

They are running tests, a lot of the same tests you mentioned your friend having. It is extremely frustrating! I just want them to find out what's wrong!!!!

ME TOO! Her and I are both nurses and we talk about it all the time. Makes no sense but they did say they think there is a correlation to what is going on with her bypass.....especially the kidney stones. She actually got septic from the kidney stones which caused a massive UTI and it went systemic... landed her in the ICU. She has had consults with infectious disease, oncologists, rheumatologists, urologists... you name it. It is so frustrating that they can't figure this out. She was doing really good for about 3 months and just a few weeks ago she started feeling run down again and they ran blood work only to find her blood counts were all low again, white and red... they had to give her another Iron infusion.. matter of fact the day I had my sleeve. She came to see me after her infusions. They are sending her for more tests. I will add you to my friend list and email you if they come up with anything. Hang in there... I know its maddening. :/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
