protein shakes causing vomiting

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had this problem? I've been drinking Protein Shakes for about 4 days and all of a sudden I've developed an intolerance. I tried to have a little sugar free pudding the other day and felt the same nausea. Could I be lactose intolerate? Also what do I do now to get my Protein?

I couldn't handle them after surgery... I would either barf or be on the verge all day if I drank them. I did liquids and Soups with surgeons permission. First few weeks you are fine without Protein if you can not handle it my surgeon told me. I would sprinkle Jay Robb unflavored egg Protein into my Soup or apple sauce etc.

Also, I'm allergic to milk and do egg Proteins. Can also do rice Proteins. Don't do whey or milk based if lactose. A lot of people have issues after with the Protein shakes.

I love Syntrax Nectars. I mix them with Water and add a crystal light individual packet to boost the flavor. Fuzzy Navel (CL orange classic) and Lemon Tea (with CL peach mango tea) are the two I'm drinking now.

I also mix powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury strawberry sorbet with Water and add some crystal light.

When was your surgery? Do you have any anti-nausea meds left? Are you drinking fluids at room-temp or body-temp (vs cold or hot)?

Katt, you are only 1 week out so it could be anything. You need to call your doctor. If you were able to drink the Protein Shakes prior to surgery than it is not lactose intolerance. If all liquids are making you sick then it is possible you will soon be dehydrated. You may need an IV infusion to give you fluids and make you feel better. Either way, please call your doctor and let him/her determine the real reason. Good luck.

One thing my pre-surgery class instructor said is that vomiting begets dehydration which makes nausea worse.... And if you're just in your first week your poor stomach needs a break! Def check in with your doc!

Looks like I've got some obstruction in the top of my stomach. ..did a swallow test (ew) that determined that. They admitted me to make sure I could get the fluids I need and tomorrow I will see the doctor for an endoscopy to see what's causing it

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
