Getting On Track

Recommended Posts

Can anybody tell me if there is a list somewhere that shows what people with gastric sleeve can and cant eat post op. I am having surgery the first of June hopefully and would like to start to get used to the idea of what i will be eating and already try to avoid the things I cant. I think that will help a great deal in the future. thanks

Are you self pay or going through your insurance? The reason I ask is because each doctor has a different plan, and my food phases may not be the food phases your doctor would recommend for you. I can scan the pages my doctor gave to me and message them to you if you would like.

If you give me your email I can send you a PDF or take a picture of my food list from surgery.

One thing that is pretty universal is a huge reduction in carbs, especially sugars. Things like Pasta, rice, and bread puff up in your stomach and cause you to suddenly feel over-full, so start limiting and eliminating those. While I have seen many people say they can eat a bite of Pasta or a small piece of thin-crust pizza later in their journeys, IMHO it's better to say goodbye to those foods and be pleasantly surprised IF you're able to enjoy them later.

Also soda / carbonated beverages. Ditch 'em now!! Any sugar-sweetened drink, swap for diet or unsweetened (such as iced tea and koolaid). Lose the whole milk and cream in favor of low-fat, but DONT use "non-dairy creamer" in your coffee, that stuff is pure sugar.

I spent a month saying goodbye to every dessert and inappropriate food ever - basically I ate "the last ___ of my life", and honestly a lot of them weren't that good when I thought about it!

You will also want to really carefully and mindfully identify any trigger foods - foods that MIGHT be ok later but you have a hard time controlling when you eat them. For me, that's Cereal and milk. I could seriously sit and eat a whole box of Cereal and a half-gallon of milk in one long binge ... Sure I'd feel like crap but I just have trouble stopping myself!! So even if I am ever "allowed" to have cereal again, I am constantly reminding myself NO, DON'T.

Get very familiar with "head hunger" and be mindful while you make choices. Read labels, make informed choices, and start angling for your maximum calories to come from Protein and a minimum to come from carbs and fat.

You can do this!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
