Obesity is a Universal Issue

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking...isn't it amazing how universal/international the issue of obesity is these days?

If you look at the locations of people on this board; also on youtube, etc., it shows how extensive the issue of weight control and obesity really is across the world. I like that this board spans continental boundaries.

When I attended an Obesity Week conference last year, I was amazed to see bariatric surgeons (and psych professionals, nutritionists) from all over the world, literally. Docs from the USA of course; but also Canada, Africa, India, New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, the UK, the Caribbean, South America, Sweden--that has a big obesity society! who knew!? Folks came from everywhere. [and alas, there were NO doughnuts/pastries at break time!!! Geez!!]

Just an observation.

PS: Even though I'm on this board purely as a VSG patient, if okay with some/others, I might periodically share info/links that was presented at that conference. I attended it to get 'the good, the bad and the ugly' about all the surgeries before I had mine two weeks later (Dec. 4th). But despite anything I might share...always follow your doctor's recommendation for you.

Have a great weekend, all.

I think it would be great if you would share any info, tips, tricks, nutrition, and anything else you learn. The more info we have the better we are able to make this a successful journey. Thank you for taking the time to post and help.

I found the info so helpful to me, as I decided which procedure to have and what to expect afterwards. I still look at the handouts for ongoing info, which is why I think I'd like to share some of it. Thanks, Shersun.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
