I know everyone is different and most people have different instructions from their surgeon/nutrionist. But....how soon after surgery did you really "eat" something? Did you just take a bite to try it out? I had surgery on Monday, and am feeling fantastic. But I want to chew something (I sound like I'm a puppy)! My instructions were a week of clear liquid, then a week of full liquids, a week of soft foods and then regular foods. Did anyone push it??? Or does anyone have any tricks or suggestions?

Five weeks and three days for me.

That's the same progression schedule that I had, Bobbie McGee, so it was about 3 1/2 weeks for me. I went straight from the doctor's office to Wendy's and ate Chili with cheese (about 1/3 of the container) and 4 of my boyfriend's french fries. Oh man, that tasted so good. No more fries since then....I am pretty strict with my low carb diet limitations. Not only do I like chewing now, I like the flavor of something in my mouth. When no more calories are allowed for the day, I will go with a sugar free popsicle or sugar free hot chocolate with some lite whip cream.

I tried to eat something too quick and threw it up....lesson learned. Try to stick to what the doctor recommended for you. I know it's tough, but throwing up is no picnic...lol Best to you!

Did anyone push it???

Bobbi

ALWAYS follow your nutritionalist's rules!!!!!

chew on that :D

week of Clear Liquids, full liquids et al

sounds good to me :)

you are right - all docs/NUTS are different'

"the one thing we all have in commen is that we're all different" :o

your tummy is recuperating

you just had MAJOR surgery

glad you are feeling well :)

but don't get ahead of the game and "try" to eat something you are not allowed to

this goes for later to, down the road - never push anything

pleassssssse

get all your Water in - sip, sip, sip

Protein shakes too

walk too, sllllllowly

don't overdue ANYTHING

i can tell with your determination, enthusiam, you'll do great!!!! :)

you'll be glad you realized you must follow all the rules for the rest of your healhier, happier, longer life

good luck

kathy

It's great that you're feeling so well. That's goods news.

However, your stomach is still healing & recuperating so I'd be very careful at this stage. Be kind to your tummy because it needs the time to heal properly. It's interesting to see how we all have different instructions after surgery. I would definitely stick with what they told you, especially being only 1 week out.

For me:

Week 1 consisted of Clear Liquids, like Jello, broths, popsicles and tea. I stayed with that because I knew my tummy had to heal, and I wasn't really that hungry. More than anything, I was bored toward the end of the week with my menu.

Week 2 - I was thrilled to be eating 3 tablespoons of real food like cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, SF pudding, creamy Soups made with milk, low fat yogurt smoothies or vanilla greek yogurts.

Week 3 & 4 - I graduated to 1/4 of canned tuna in Water, egg whites, canned turkey chili, bean Soup (some ppl have a tough time with Beans at first), ricotta cheese, cottage cheese...

Week 5 & on - I've been given the green light to try lean meats (up to 3/4 - 1 cup). I usually have 1/2 - 3/4 cups of food now. Tummy seems to be OK.

Burping is my sign that I'm full so when I start or feel it's coming, I stop.

Talk with your NUT & get her feedback. But, my suggestion for now is to really let yourself heal. One day at a time.

Good luck

I agree with proudgrammy.

I did exactly what I was told and I never threw up once or had nausea.

It is NOT worth the risk of doing damage to your still recovering body. You just have to ride it out and be patient. Easy for me to say--I know, much more difficult for you to do.

I know I was SO excited to eat and chew cottage cheese when I was allowed to eat it.

Blessings and good luck,

Kathleen

Hey Bobbi McGee

I had the sleeve Monday and I'm on a clear liquid diet until Tues when I go to post op and eat some food. Try the sugar free Jello. You can chew it. mush it, squish it and swallow it in your mouth.
Glad your feeling so good. The ladies are right you had MAJOR surgery, 80% of your stomach is gone so get those stinking thinking eating thoughts out and think about the near future when you are going to look so good. Let your body heal.

I took my 1st outside walk today for 10 min and it felt great.

We got fat by pushing the normal amounts we can eat so lets follow the Dr's orders and not push any food yet.

The words in Janis Joplin's Me and Bobby McGee seems to say it all for me. "Freedom is just another word for nothing else to loose"

Good luck you can do it.

Try chewing gum, or even bubble gum. There are even flavored chewing gums out there.

I remember being SO glad when I could EAT something again, even a Protein bar. But I stuck to the rules, and I'm glad I did.

You can do this!

No gum our soda for me Ever again.

But to each his own. They can fill you up with gas. Take a look at the surgery you just had on YouTube and appreciate just what you went through and see of you want to risk any possible damage.

I'm following my plan, I was just curious if anyone felt the same way. I can have yogurt on Monday, which is only 2 more days away. I'm just getting sick of this clear Protein Drink. And I'll be happier once I can have some milk and my chocolate Protein Shake. I'm not pushing it. I've made such a drastic decision to better my life, I'm not going to mess it up. It's just hard to make a full dinner for my family and not participate. I know it's only a few days. But it's a thought that has run through my head.

I chewed on ice from sonic during this phase. I'd get Water and flavor it with SF Hawaiian punch flavor and pour over my ice just to flavor it. Yummy!

Does sonic have the SF Hawaiian punch? I get crushed ice from circle k gas station. I love it. Otherwise I just want to gulp down a whole glass of water.

I feel exactly like you! I am two weeks post op and feel absolutely wonderful, and can't hardly wait to get moving more, but I am Very tired of the liquid stuff. I can have cottage cheese at this point, and i "Chew" it, but doesn't seem to help that feeling at all. I have 2 days to go before i can start my soft food stage for 2 weeks and my hands are itching to start Now! But i keep reminding myself that i've just been given a new start, and i certainly don't want to screw it up!. and to top that off, I quit smoking 2 weeks ago as well, so talk about climbing the walls by not being able to fill That void!! But again, a new start for a new me, and I very much want it to work!! Good luck, you can do it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
