Medications and Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I take five psychiatric meds a day. I have been seriously considering gastric sleeve, but I'm afraid it will affect how my meds are absorbed. I take some at Breakfast, some at lunch, some at dinner, so it's not just once a day. I can't have them go through my stomach too fast so they're not effective. I'm also considering Lap Band for this reason.

Does anyone have experience with this type of situation? Doesn't have to be psych meds, any kind of meds would be affected. This is one of my biggest reasons to hesitate making the appointment with the bariatric surgeon, that and potential for weight regain later despite best efforts. I don't want to end up on permanent liquid only, or something like 1000 calories day. That seems too low to me.

Thanks for any help you can give with this. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Thanks!

I just read that you can't have NSAIDs ever with a Lap Band. Is this also true for gastric sleeve? I need those for spine pain (I have a collapsed disc). That alone would disqualify me from the surgery. Hoping it's compatible.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
