Having a hard time eating?

Recommended Posts

So I'm five weeks had the sleeve done on jan 14th, and I'm having a hard time eating? I feel like I'm still in week one and the only thing I can manage to get down Is Protein Shakes and broth, and frankly I'm over both.... If I try to eat anything else I feel like I'm gonna throw it up or I feel nauseous. Don't know what to do. Help

I'm 2.5 weeks post op and was having the same issue this week. My md had me eat at the office. I simply don't know how to gauge myself yet. We have to train ourselves to eat and drink all over again. I was drinking and eating too fast even after slowing down it was still to fast. I was also taking in too much. Just had it all wrong. Now I count to 100 when chewing. I know it sounds crazy but until I get it right. I also bought a camelback water bottle. It kind of restricts how much you can drink in one gulp. Those two things have helped.

You may want to call your NUT for advice here.

Are you trying mushy / puree foods? Maybe they're not 'soft' enough for you at this point? I could only have 3 tablespoons of soft foods (like cream of wheat & mashed potatoes) for 2 weeks, but I was able to keep it down.

I'm 5 weeks post-op now & can eat 1/2 - cup of food. For some reason, I tend to struggle getting enough daily fluids in. I don't know why, just can't manage to get it all in.

Best advice anyone can give you... call your NUT or Dr's office and see what they suggest. It'll get better!!!

I feel your pain! I am 6 weeks out and I can barely tolerate anything that requires chewing lately. I know my doctor is going to tell me to go back to liquids.....I know the routine, it's a vicious circle. So, I will go back to my smoothies.....again. It SUCKS big time. It makes eating a chore. I've never had to work so hard to get food in. Good luck I hope you are able to get something in soon.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
