Not enough information before sleeved

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Debi and I was sleeved May of 2012. I have only lost 40 lbs and after researching what I can do I have come to the realization everyone had months of classes except me. I'm starting to think it was because I paid cash, therefore, they wanted me in quickly. I went to one class the day I visited the doctor and the next day had surgery. After talking to several people I found they were required to attend several nutritional classes. When I realized what happened I contacted the doctor's office, Dr. James Atkinson & Dr. Soong, and was told I would have to pay an additional $75. I was too mad at this point to go and probably bit my own nose off to spite myself, so now I'm looking for help from all my fellow sleevers.

Hoping to hear from someone.

My sincere thanks

I didn't have any special classes. I did all my research at the tips of my fingers on top of common sense.

Let's not be a victim and get your info on your computer and on this site. Its a great place to start!

Have any specific questions?

Debi, time to look forward not back. So well done for coming on here and looking for help.

Back to basics as others have said. Jayson is spot on with what you should be eating and drinking. There's lots of good advice on here and online for the types of food you should be eating but basically turkey, chicken, ham, fish, cheese, yogs, good quality meat. Try to avoid high levels of carbs and if you eat them, go for "good carbs". Keep sugar in any form to a minimum. Take your Vitamins every day. Drink Water. And keep moving....

I didn't have nutrition classes etc and had my surgery three weeks after being approved. But I decided it was up to me to find out as much as I could about what I should be eating post op - and I took responsibility for sticking to it.

The fact that you came on here suggests to me that you haven't given up on getting back losing weight. I admire that. Keep that attitude and keep posting to let us know how you are doing :-)

I'm glad you are attempting to learn more. I am sooo grateful my insurance required me to take the classes 6 months. I wasn't too happy at first of course. The nutrition class is like training wheels for a bicycle. After the last class I have the knowledge to ride a 10 speed.

I learned to not drink Water 30 min before and after each meal, chew 30 times before swallowing, put my eating utensils down between each bite, Portion Control, eat small meals throughout the day, and drink Protein shakes etc.

6 months in and still learning. Hey, it's a learning experience.

My packet was submitted to my insurance company today. I'm prepared for the journey! Good luck.

I didn't have any classes. I researched for months before even starting the process. I had one visit with a nutritionist and that was it besides the pre-op testing such as psych eval.

Deb your in the right place now!! To make your sleeve work for you just keep a Memo pad or a little notebook and write down the words of wisdom you see on this forum. Ie: diet, exercise and keep a food/water intake journal. You will be able to see if you need to adjust your food by your journal as well. Good luck

Hi Debi,

I see that you were sleeved. Do you have follow up appointments? I'm glad to see you here. My goodness, 2012, is when you were sleeved and have lost 40 pounds, congratulations on that. That's really good though but don't know your stats to actually know just how good. What was your surgery weight if you don't mind me asking.

There's lot's of veterans here that can help you. If I were you I would call your surgeons office and have them mail you a post op information packet. Just tell them you never got one. Also ask when your next appointment should be.

Did you ever have a follow up appointment?

There may be terms and grounds to sue your surgeon if not.

Sincerely Sherri

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
