I'm 15 days post op, and as of 3am this morning, I have the flu. I had thought last night it was my acid reflux acting up, but I woke up out of a dead sleep and couldn't stop throwing up! I went every 15-30 mind and mostly it was dry heaving.

I was supposed to go back to work today, but I had to call off my shift for today because well I'm sick (I take care of three mentally challenged brothers) and because if I can't stop throwing up, I have to go to the hospital.

I have thrown up since about 8 this morning. Surgeon wants me to try Clear liquids, but my stomach is screaming "nooo." Has anyone had the flu post op?

No. I have been blessedly healthy since my surgery (actually more healthy than I had been for years prior). I am sorry you are sick. Do you have anyone who can help you out as you recover? You really need to take care of yourself so you heal well. Sounds like you have lots of folks who rely on you as well. Good luck.

Call your Surgeon and or Primary Physician and ask them to give you medication for Nausea. That way perhaps you can hold some fluids down so you don't get dehydrated. When you can hydrate, drink G2 Gatorade to keep your electrolytes up. Sorry your sick. Sending positive healing energy your way. Also when caught early your Dr. can give you Tamiflu so that it's short lived. But you gotta get the Tamiflu ASAP.

Sincerely, Sherri

Sounds like you have a tummy virus no the flu 9 super common mistake) The flu is in the head mostly consists of chills and fever and comes on like a ton of bricks. A gastric virus causes stomach upheaval.

Let your body do what it needs to do, Try to sleep and drink fluids as tolerated.

I get sick about 1 a month with my period, I throw up all day and by 6 or 7 everything subsides and I can drink some chicken broth and G2 to keep from getting dehydrated.

But call your doc if you are concerned.

I had it this weekend. Non stop both ends for 24 hours. I sipped watered down Gatorade but, it came out of me soon after. I could not eat the next day. My stomach wanted nothing to do with food. I still feel a bit run down. Good luck.

I called my surgeon, he checked up on my every few hours today. I was mostly dry heaving, but once 9am hit I stopped. Been nauseous all day, but no active heaving. Surgeon wanted me to try to push Clear Liquids to keep hydrated, but I've been sleeping most of the day.

I'm sore, very very sore stomach but whatever this is I hope it goes away soon! Will definitely get Gatorade once I'm able to get out of bed.

Bright side; I've lost 5 pounds from throwing up (im sure it's all Water weight!)

Thank you everyone for the responses :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
