is 165lbs reasonable

Recommended Posts

Just got through talking with surgeon and he thinks I will level off at 180lbs. I want to be 165lbs. He said that 165 would be 100% of my excess weight and would be very impressed if I reached 165. That kind of burst my bubble. Oh well. I'm still going to try to get to 165.

I am in the medical field, so I can tell you that no surgeon, no doctor, no other medical practitioner will ever over-promise anything. If he tells you that you can get to 165 and you don't, he doesn't want to be blamed for it. But that in no way should discourage you. You decide how successful you are, not your surgeon! :)

I think doctors just want to give us manageable numbers. But I too am aiming for 100% excess weight off and I think I can do it. I feel that the numbers doctors give is if you just do the bare minimum.

My doctor thinks I can get to 150, but I don't! I have the opposite problem! I think 170 is reasonable. I'm 5'10 and 150 seems extreme! But hey, maybe I'll surpass that even! I just know for me, I'd be happy under 200. Currently 245, down from 297 :)

Do what's right for you! And honestly you won't know until you get there. Go get em!

I lost well over 100% excess weight. It's very possible if you want it to be possible.

Well I'd like to share that when I was talking with my surgeon he did say after 3 more months I can increase my meal size to 5 oz from 4 oz. So that means 3oz of meat like usual but I get to increase my veggies to 2 oz. Very happy about that. I like my veggies. He also mentioned that I should exercise more.

Same thing happened to me. My surgeon set my goal at 160-170. I'm 5'4" so that is still 30 lbs overweight. I was very disappointed and wondering why I would remove 85% of my stomach to stay overweight. I eventually created my own goal based on body fat percentage and the desire for a normal bmi. I hit my surgeon's goal around 6 months out. I now an 2-3 lbs from my personal goal and 7 from my stretch goal. I believe you can do anything you put your mind too.

PS- my surgeon also said I would not lose anymore weight the last time I saw him. That was 5 lbs ago!

just adding that when i seen the surgeon they took blood work and said they would call only if their was anything abnormal. hopefully i won't get a call. also i mentioned that my blood sugar was averaging around the low 70's in the morning, he added that my a1c should be below 5.9. however I will need to do bloodwork for at least a year every 3 months and check the a1c because it could change even if its not related to diet or exercise. so basically just like ive read on these forums that its a possibility that any test further out might indicate the need for diabetic meds again. oh well. also we discussed the hunger hormone ghrelin and the fullness hormone leptin and yes they will regenerate and will come back in time. however as long as i continue to eat and weigh my meals and not go over the hunger should be manageable. not anything like pre op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
