April 2014 pre-op group

Ur lucky they did the potassium thru ur Iv. I was also low after surgery & I had to drink this cup of it & let me tell u it was AWFUL!!! Then when they discharged me I was given a prescription for a capsule of potassium & take it daily for 2 weeks!

OMG I bet! I guess I will be happy with the IV. The only downfall was that it burned a bit going in.

At my preop appt they told me to take my blood pressure meds with a sip of Water the day of surgery. I ignored that and am so glad I did. I ignored it because I know it's easier to bring high BP down then to raise low BP up. My BP coming out of surgery was 85/47. I normally run 130/90 ish. Before I was discharged my BP was 110/69. The doctor told me not to take the BP meds again.

I report to the hospital in 10 hours. I am in the hotel room now, just going to hop into the shower and get ready for bed. I drove down this morning leaving home at 4:30 to make my 10:00 a.m. appt. I am going to be alone as we can't afford for my husband to stay in a hotel for more days and he is awaiting shoulder surgery and is very uncomfortable himself and is not too pleasant due to his pain. My only challenge is that they require someone to pick me up but I don't have anyone to do that. I am not going to drag friends to drive 10 hours on the day I get discharged, when they work the next day. So, maybe I'll call a cab to drive me a block and then come back to get my car.

If you are on pain meds you will not be able to drive. I would have a backup plan just in case. Have a great sleep. Good luck in the morning.

How long does it take you to drink all of this

It usually takes about an hour to finish the 4 oz of broth and it takes all day to finish the bottle of Isopure. I take 1 oz of something every 15 minutes.

I am only allowed Clear Liquids and skim milk for my protein for the first two weeks post op. I talked to my surgeon because I'm really having trouble getting in the skim milk because I've always hated milk (was allergic to it as a child). He said for me, for the first two weeks, my focus should be on getting enough fluids in and staying hydrated. My stomach has been a gurgley mess but I'm getting fluids in. But I am starting to worry about what kind of effects this very low protein will have on me after 2 weeks. But I guess he knows best. I'm getting in my Vitamins for the most part so hopefully it will be ok.

I tried one of those clear New Whey Protein Shots that you can get at Walmart. They are clear and 42 g protein so I thought I'd try it. It is so gross but I figure it's better than no protein so I'm slowly choking it down.

Any other suggestions for protein on a clear liquid diet?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
