I am not getting enough Proteins still but 4 months out my hair is a lot thinner then it was (first year I am told it stinks) and it has a lot of split ends from breaking. So my texture is kind of scratchy feeling rather then silky soft as it used to be. My hair is normally very curly and now its more wavy. I think that is from the breaks and thinning though. I am now taking Biotin to see if it helps and trying to up Proteins.< /p>

I'm almost at two months out after years of stopping growth at about chin length, my hair now just about reaches my bra strap. When I was pre-opt, I talked to a sleeved vet in the lobby and I told her I was afraid of losing hair. She asked if I had in hair color/bleach/a perm/any chemicals. I told her no and she said neither had she and she hadn't experienced any hair losss and I probably wouldn't either. So far she's right, but then I have thick, curly hair, so it could be thinning and I wouldn't notice right away.

I posted a threat about how my hair grown and looks a lot more healthy since surgery. I'm 2 months post op. But I don't have any chemicals whatsoever in my hair and I only use heat once a month. I got my hair extremely healthy before surgery. I wonder if that is helping?

it starts to fall out around the 4th or 5th month.

It doesn’t have anything to do with your hair being treated or not the act of surgery it happens but rapid weightloss makes your hair fall out.

I did find though that after my gall bladder op I got grey hair then after the sleeve I got even more grey hair same thing happened to my sister with her appendix op she got grey hair lol

Hair loss and growth is internal and has absolutely nothing to do with coloring it. The hair on the outside of your body is dead and while coloring it can damage it and cause it to break it can not cause it to fall out. If you're only two months out your hair is probably better due to all the extra Protein, Water, and Vitamins you are getting. Give it another couple of months and you will probably lose a bit of hair. I have seen it be quite extreme but only once have I seen someone who's hair didn't grow back and it was because she refused to eat protein or take vitamins. This, for most people that have wls is just par for the course.

I am very sorry you have both experienced hair loss. I'm can tell that was upsetting and a traumatic experience. I stated in my original post that I have thick, curly hair and that it's quite possible it could be thinning and I just haven't noticed yet.

The veteran I spoke to was a year out and had not experienced Hair loss or thinning. Prior to surgery, she did not use chemicals in her hair. After surgery she of course took in the necessary Protein and supplements which I'm sure was helpful to her continued Hair growth.

Everyone is different. It's not reasonable to say everyone is going to lose hair, nor is it reasonable to say everyone who doesn't use chemicals in their hair won't.

Again, we are all different.

I simply shared my experiences and those of a woman I spoke with.

Agreed. I was simply stating that I had worked very hard before surgery to get my hair healthy by not using chemicals. I am African American I knows many experiences of other African Americans losing hair from their scalp from

Relaxers and hair color. I have experienced significant hair growth since my surgery which may or may not last. We will see. But everyone is different. I know some who have and some who have not.

No one was saying you were wrong just also giving opinions and info on what we know personally and speaking or reading by many others too.
It’s a common listed side effect of rapid weight loss, any kind of rapid weight loss not just surgery type related.

For me my hair was falling out before wls because i had extreme ibs had the op it slowed right down in the first month, stopped falling out the second month I was happy as hell with that thought I was gonna bypass the whole hair falling out phase.
Wrong!
Not long after 5 months out it started falling out slowly at first then faster and continued for a few months.
Yes I noticed it because I have very fine thin hair there isn’t loads and loads of it to hide continued loss and bright white scalp.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
