Non-Dairy protein suggestions

Recommended Posts

Thank you so much everyone! And Dee, so great info, thank you!

I can't have any of the meats during soft food stage (turkey, chicken, etc), but will definitely be trying a lot of the above.

Body Fortress also makes a soy Protein I believe. I've seen it in the store before. If you are allowed to have Decaf coffee, the vanilla is great in place of milk and sugar.

Hi, I'm looking for some suggestions/advice on non-dairy Protein. I'm in the pureed stage, moving to soft foods soon. I feel like all I eat for Protein is dairy stuff (Protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt). Maybe once in awhile I get protein from a few Beans, but it's not the majority. My stomach seems upset quite a lot and I think it might be from all the dairy.

Any ideas out there for other sources? I do not eat fish, so no talapia, baby shrimp, etc.

Thanks!

I am allergic to the whey as well and can't stomach most of the milk/dairy products. After enough pain, and I am 6 months out, I finally said enough is enough and a week ago I bought Jarrows Organic Brown Rice vanilla flavored Protein powder for $9.99 (2 Tablespoons have 11 grams of protein 29 servings). Sometimes I double it, making 22 grams of protein. I use my tiny blender and it gets pretty thick so I make it like 4-5 ounces.

I also bought Now Sports Egg plain flavored Protein Powder which is a high quality protein for $15.00 (2ounces or a scoop has 16 grams of protein and 27 servings). The one I bought is plain at 16 grams of protein for a scoop. There is a vanilla crème flavored one that has a bit more protein to the scoop.

I wish I had done this sooner. I am no longer having the stomach distress since I switched from whey and other milk Protein Shakes and I actually feel better like the nutrition is finally reaching my cells.

Now, I aspire to eat like Dee_1111 getting my protein mostly from foods, and good food at that! But for some reason even after being 6 months out I am only taking in approx. 500 calories ( just get too full). I am hoping now though with my recent switch and reduced stomach distress, that this will help me boost my calories up to 800, and only use my alternative protein powders to help me reach my protein and nutritional goals.

I ordered my protein powders from Piping Rock online. Hope this helps!!!

Since surgery, I like plain old split pea Soup. I sometimes add a little black pepper and/or liquid smoke for more flavor.

Have you tried the vegetarian meat substitute? It's really processed soybeans that are dried and flavored like beef or chicken. When you add hot Water and a lot of imagination it almost tastes like ground beef. It likes to take on the flavor of whatever it's cooked with. It's sometimes called textured vegetable Protein, or TVP. You'll have to watch the salt content, if that's a problem. I've found it branded by Augason Farms at our local Wal-mart stores in their food storage or large food quantity/container aisle.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
