Anyone have a Mirena?

Recommended Posts

So I'll be getting the Mirena IUD soon and I'm worried that it's going to be very painful. I've only known two people who've had them- one has had children and the other hasn't. Both of them have said that it was very painful and they had to take a few days off of work. I don't have very much vacation time left and I don't want to take any days off. My doctor told me that it can be more painful for women who haven't had children vaginally. Does anyone have any experience getting a Mirena inserted that wasn't painful?

Thank you!!

Yeah i had one put in. It was a few moment of discomfort during insertion and then more just cramping, No reason to take off work, at least with my experience. Much LESS painful than giving birth!

I've never had children -- and for me the mirena was extremely painful going in. But wow, not enough to miss days from work! That surprises me that people would have lasting effects like that. It hurt at the time they inserted it. and then I just had to be still and lay down for about 15 minutes to catch my breath. But after that I was totally fine. I just had it removed because it had been 5 years, but I will be having a new one placed in about a month. This time the dr said she will give me a couple of Valium to take before and I think I'll be fine with that.

Mirena was a TOTAL NIGHTMARE for me. It hurt badly going in. I was in pain for days. Then, every time I got my period the cramps were do bad that I had to actually call off work every month. I would just curl up in a ball and cry it got so bad. I suffered with it for a year. Now, my husband has a vasectomy. One of the top 5 days in my life was the day I got that thing out.

I have 1 child, but I gave birth via C Section, so no help there on the pain.

I have Mirena. I have four kids, all were c-sections and I didn't really feel anything. However I should mention that I had mines put in weeks after I had my last child and was able to utilize my pain meds before getting it done b/c I heard it was horrible. My sister asked me about my experience before she had hers put in and was very upset with me afterwards because she said it was very painful and I had told her it wasn't bad at all so...

When I got mine I took two hydrocodone 30 mins prior and it still wasn't enough to reduce the pain. Took days to be able to manage the pain. Will be getting mine removed soon. The bad side effects are not worth the benefits IMO.

I'm on my 2nd Mirena and I LOVE it! The first time I was about a year after childbirth and I did cramp for about 30 minutes. Then it was fine! The 2nd time didn't hurt at all! I haven't had a cycle in about 9 years!

I had mine put in about a year or two after my son was born. I felt a little pinch when it went in, but that was about it. It's really not that bad. You're supposed to do it either when you're on or just coming off your period b/c your cervix is a little bit open at that point, so it's not as bad. Otherwise, it CAN be really painful. So, my advice would be to watch your cycle and try to make your appointment around that.

Thank you for all the responses. I'll be getting the Mirena put in tomorrow so this has been helpful. It seems from the responses that there is a 50/50 split on whether it will be really painful or no problem at all. My doctor's office does them on day 3-5 of your period so hopefully that will help. I'll report in tomorrow on how it went for me in case anyone wants to know.

I had the Mirena put in this morning. It hurt going in quite a bit, especially when the doctor was taking a measurement, but it only lasted a minute and I got through it with some deep breathing. I felt a little crampy for 5 minutes and after that I can no longer tell that anything was done. Let's hope it stays this way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
