To Gym or Not to Gym?

Recommended Posts

Thank you Yoda. I have noticed that the Canadain section is getting more littered with unhelpful posts. We are not trying to have an exclusive club here or anything, but the reason why we have a Canadian section is to discuss things that relate to Canadains who's situation is often radically different from the US.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. :)

Although I do walk quite a bit I just really need to do more. Or at least that is how I feel. So I think I am going to look into the gym.

I have made an appointment to take a tour of the gym near me and hopefully if all works out I will be a new member of this gym this weekend. It is not a curves or womens only because I do not really have a problem with that but it seems really great with pools, tracks and all of that good stuff. Anyway the price is really good too from what I have been able to see.

Hopefully I will be able to make this into my routine and stick with it.

I told myself that this time is quite different than 4 years ago when I stopped going to the gym. 4 years ago I would not have been strong enough to make the decision to go through with surgery and I think that is the difference. I am in a new zone now. I mean if I can make the commitment to the band then I can do the same with the gym. :D

Good for you for going forward. I hope you love it as I think I do sometimes, maybe, I think I might.....:guess

In fact, I have my Lululemon pants on right this very minute and heading out the door to my 8:30 personal fitness trainer....yikes....

Ohhhhh... Lululemon. I can't fit into their clothes yet. :cry Hopefully someday soon I will. That would be good. :)

I will have to look into the trainer business as well. I think you can sign up with them on a session to session basis which is nice. I might have them help me out with working out a plan to follow. That way I will know what I am doing and how to do it when I start out.

The good thing about having an appointment with a trainer is that you are also motivated to make that appointment. I have never used a trainer though. If you are looking into a trainer make sure they have some qualifications, basically anyone can say they are a personal trainer.

That gym you are looking into sounds great, pool, track, and all that will be nice.

Andrew.

Yeah Dame J ...your prospective gym sounds like it is an awesome facility!

Remember...it takes 21 days to break a habit or form a new habit....so once you've gone to the gym 21 times....I betcha it will become a habit and you will feeeeel the neeeeeed to go!!!!

Yay for you!

:clap2:

The gym does sound pretty good. Can't wait to see what it looks like inside. I have only ever driven past it cause it is 5 min drive away from my house. :)

So 21 days or visits to create a habit eh? well I hope it works. I am sure it will. I am already super excited just to go and check it out. I have been visualizing grabbing my gym bag after work throwing it in the car and going to the gym.

I have even highlighted some of the classes that they offer that I would want to try out. All classes come with the membership so that is really handy.

Hope this place is as hype as I hope it is. :D

Gone, came back now, hated it, but glad I went. lol! Now, I am going to count to see if I have been 21 times.....

WISH MY GYM HAD A POOL. But we have one in our back yard, so when that gets up and running, I will really have fun.

I haven't joined a gym at 5 years out I am debating it... I think it is the same as anyone if you will use it join the gym, if you won't use it don't waste your money.

As someone else mentioned the key is exercise... we all need to move whether that is walking or on a treadmill at home or the gym, doesn't matter. Getting movement as a consistent effort in your life is really important.

Putting my two cents worth in on gym or not to gym, if you're not comfortable with the setting then you won't use it. But for exercise I also park at the far end of the parking lot no matter what appointment I have and at work etc just to get in extra steps. Plus I walk (now jog) the dogs after supper - it not only helps in exercise but helps me digest as well. And remember one day at a time - you'll start to love how you feel after you get some exercise in. And I find it's a good way to get in some Water.

Have fun and change your routine often so you don't get bored. Good luck!

Hey Argon, would you mind telling me your workout schedule in terms of reps and stuff? I am impressed with the inches you have lost and that sounds like a doable workout schedule for me, thanks. It kind of sounds like the body for life workout, is that what you do?

I don't think it's based on that, but who knows. I just let the gym ladies tell me what to do, and I do it. I plan to go back to the gym on Wed., so I'll bring back my program and type it out. I could tell you what I did tonight, but since I don't know the names of anything, or the machine names, it would be pretty errr... confusing. I don't even think if I typed out the names, if it would make sense, I think these ladies just make up their own!

So yeah, Wed., I'll post it. ;)

LOVE THE GYM!!! :biggrin1: :biggrin1:

Went to the gym today. First time since signing up. Anyway it was great. I had a tour of the equipment and set up my free appointment for the trainer. It was really great and I feel sooooo much better. Although I worked out for an hour I feel like I have so much energy and I could just dance through my day.

I hope these feelings of love for the gym stick around, but if Yoda is right and it take 17 times to make a habit then I guess 1 down 16 to go. :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
