How much protein should I have?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. My doc recommends getting 60 - 80 grams of Protein per day. Is it a problem to go higher than that (100 - 115ish) so long as my calories stay below 1000? If it matters, I am only 3 weeks post-op for lap band. Thanks for your help!

If you are only 3 weeks post op, I doubt you will be able to do more than the recommended. I say that only because at this stage, you are still not full recovered and not eating normally.

Also, there is really no reason to need more than the recommended Protein.

Actually, with Protein shakes you can far exceed this. My surgeon says that as long as I don't have kidney problems, the Proteins won't hurt me and if anything, they will be far better for me than the carbs. In fact, he suggests to eat my Proteins first, veges 2nd, carbs 3rd and if I can eat the carbs, next time to increase the Protein and try to get away from the carbs as much as possible. I'm getting to where I don't even prepare them, much less put them on my plate. Hubby still likes them, but he's learning to live without them too.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
