The Dreaded Catheter!

Recommended Posts

See convenient and life saving I knew I liked them :) was it as bad as you thought?

Wasn't bad at all! Though getting up to walk and moving certain ways did give me some "zings" that weren't great....so I was glad to get it out, but all in all it was worth it for the peace of mind!

I had a catheter. It was fascinating to watch pee go down the tube when I totally didn't feel like I had to pee at all! I had no issues walking with it. It was attached to the base of my IV pole and I just wheeled it down the hall with me. It was uncomfortable to have it removed, but it was only a minute. I was happy to be able to put on underpants though. I'm a lady, damnit.

If I had one for VSG, it was in after I was out and out before I was lucid! I had one with a previous surgery, and it's not a party, but not as bad as you're imagining either. Typically, once you're up, they'll remove it as they WANT you to pee on your own and they WANT you to walk. You could request to have it removed before they take you out of the recovery room to your room. You may not even remember you had it if they do that! Either way, they WILL pump you full of LOTS of Fluid during the surgery and having your bladder bursting before you're ready to be up to the bathroom would not be a party either!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
