Those stomach cramps WEREN'T normal!

Recommended Posts

Well as some of you may know I have been complaining about stomach cramps. I had my sleeve done on February 7th and less than a week out I was suffering from severe stomach cramps. To the point where I couldn't eat, I didn't drink, and I wasn't using the bathroom. I brought it up to my doctor at my follow up appointment and he switched me to the full liquids thinking maybe that would give my stomach something to do instead of cramp.

Sunday morning, the cramps got so bad that I bought myself to the ER. I had a cat scan done and was later admitted because my stomach is severely inflamed. Its so inflamed that its pushing up against my pancreas. I was severely dehydrated because I couldnt swallow anything due to the cramping. They really don't know what could have caused it other than maybe my natural reaction to having the surgery done. I'm still in the hospital now, and they have me on high doses of antibiotics so hopefully make the swelling go down. They hope to watch me for the rest of the weekend coming home maybe Thursday or Friday.

Luckily I didn't have any leaks or anything like that in my stomach but it's still a super painful. Moral of the story is always trust your body. If you know that you're having some pains that aren't normal, go to your doctor immediately.

I had something like this at almost 6 months out, very scary. Went to the ER but all they could tell from the CT scan is that it was inflamed. I called my doctor (I am 3 hrs from WLS office) but they didn't have much more to tell me except do liquids only for a few days and see. It settled down in a few days and Zofran plus antacids helped (had nausea too). Never figured it out but maybe it was a virus.

My doctor wanted to tell me that at first and just have me discharged assuming 'it was just normal healing pains.' The two ER doctors knew it was more than that and pushed to keep me. Turns out, its really bad. The stomach meds aren't working, and the dilaudid is just about taking the edge off of the pains. Hopefully this antibiotic thing takes care of it. But I think my doc had his tail between his legs when he found out how much pain I was really in, and especially when the catscan results came back.

Thanks, all! You have no idea how much the support helps!

They have me on dilaudid every 3 hours and two antibiotics being switched out all day. I had to get another leak test, and it turned out to be fine. (THANK GOD!) But its scary not knowing why it is infected...

Will keep you all posted!

If its an infection you should be asking your surgeon the possible causes. Make sure he didn't do anything wrong. He may have done a perfect, textbook sleeve surgery and it could just be something you picked up in the hospital and took a few days to present itself. But you should find out. Good luck in healing.

Oh, believe me. I asked. He said its most likely just my bodies natural reaction to the surgery.

I don't like pointing fingers. I just want to get better and begin to enjoy my new life.

Of course. I wouldn't want to cause problems. But it's good to know if you needed to take further action or not. It's disheartening that he wouldn't take you seriously sooner. Thank God for the ER docs!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
