No Bread, Pasta, Rice for 6 mos? Really?

really??? My NUT said if you are going to eat carbs of any sort to make sure you pair it with Protein...always. I am trying to steer clear of carbs as much as possible but it is Sunday and my mom made sauce so I am not going to confirm or deny taking a nibble.

Lucky you. I was told I need to basically cut all those things out completely. I am sure down the line (after 6 months). I can have them every once in a while. For now it's a no go. It will affect your weight loss.

No this is not the reason. The reason is that it swells in your stomach and takes up a lot of room that should be filled with dense Protein.

I was told everything in moderation. EVERYTHING. I eat rice, noodles and bread at times. Not at the same time..LOL I chose which ones I eat carefully. I eat wild rice and multi- grain noodles and bread that is rye or pumpernickel....

I am 15 months out.

I'm basically to remove them completely from my diet from now on Bc of the carb content.

There just isn't room until about 6 months for that stuff. It is so important to feed your body well post op. I really only had room for Protein. But trust me it is well worth it! I am 2.5 years out and enjoy anything now in moderation.

I have to cut all that stuff (and more) out until I reach goal, per my dietician's orders. I started out as SMO (BMI of 60) so I'm 8 months out and still have weight to lose. Nothing with grains, no starchy veg, no refined sugar. I really haven't missed it.* I'm focused on eating well and staying on track in order to keep losing weight. Stuff like bread and Pasta doesn't have enough nutrition for me to waste my stomach space on it!

*Disclaimer - I was given the go-ahead to sample (not gorge on) whatever I wanted on Christmas Day and I did eat all sorts of things that day, in tiny amounts. It all agreed with me so that was good, and I enjoyed my little bites. But I was able to close the book on that and move on the next day quite easily.

My plan was no bread, rice, Pasta for 4 months, and after that, only in moderation. I'm 14 months out, and I rarely eat any of that. It's surprising to me, since all that was the mainstay of my diet before surgery. I was really doubtful that I would be able to stick with that after surgery, but I really don't even miss it. It's high in calories and carbs, low in Protein, so it doesn't suit my needs. I do have it once in a while, and it doesn't bother me at all, but my whole my diet is changed now.

Don't look at it as something you CAN'T have and give yourself time after surgery to figure out what fuels your new body. I was petrified about giving up bread (I'm a baker!) and now I really don't want it (2 months post op). My family loves Asian food and I'm a sucker for pad thai. I had no idea what I was going to do!! As it stands I was completely satisfied with a bite of the crust of some fresh baked sourdough last week. I had a bite of my husband's pad thai for the taste and was good. I'm in no way a nutrition expert, but one of the hardest things seems to be changing our thoughts about food. Food isn't "good" or "bad", its fuel for the awesome machine that is our body. Give it some good stuff and make the best choices that you can;-) Good luck!!!

I'm just over 7 months out & I still haven't had rice. I've had a couple of bites of someone else's Pasta dish, and once I had a little bit of mac & cheese, but that's really it. I've had tortilla wraps a couple of times & I eat those Arnold Sandwich Thins (the Flax & Fiber ones). When I do have bread, I make sure that I've eaten Protein & veggies first. Like MichiganChic above, those things were mainstays in my diet, but I really don't miss them now.

I'm in maintenance, but my plan was also no bread, Pasta, or rice during weight loss. I stuck to that and it's one of the reasons I was so successful. I eat plenty of carbs in maintenance now, healthy carbs. Use your honeymoon phase wisely. It will be over before you know it.

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
