post- op food ideas?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. I want to make sure to have the right foods in the house. Yes, the doc gave me a grocery list and menu ideas, but I'd love to hear it from you guys on what I should have in the house. What did you eat right away, what worked and what didn't?

Thanks!!

Nothing....!!! You're not going to "eat" anything right away. Maybe clear or maybe full liquids, but that is about it for a couple of weeks.

I don't want to speak for anyone, but I have a feeling that's what the OP means.

I was on full liquids for 4 weeks (started Protein shakes + Water the day after while in the hospital). I could have 1oz shake every hour, 0 calories drinks (like Crystal Lite, Powerade 0 ,etc), sf Jello, sf puddings, cream soups/broth, sf popsicles, yogurt, and runny cream of wheat. I was terrified of getting a leak so I didn't even eat Jello for fear it was too solid for a couple weeks. Then I got hungry. So very hungry...

If I never see another cup of split pea Soup (of course put into the food processor to get out the lumps) again it'll be too soon. On day 7, I felt like crap. Nauseous. Couldn't even drink a sip of Water. By 7 pm I realized that I was dehydrated. It's a viscous cycle: Ur nauseous cuz ur not drinking but u can't drink cuz ur nauseous. I managed to down 16 oz of Powerade 0(a plus after surgery since it has electrolytes, u need those).

I dreamed about the day I could eat soft foods. in fact, my first meal was well planned out. I was going to have a small amt of refried Beans, topped with cheddar, sour cream and taco sauce. It was like eating steak and lobster. My first bite of mashed potatoes was like an ice cream sundae, and my first bites of scrambled egg were like heaven.

Good luck with ur surgery. Ull do fine. All of us manage to make it thru the restrictive part and come out better for it...

Hi Valerie,

I'm 5 wks and 2 days post op. In the hospital I could hardly get down any Water. The gave me Protein Jello and I kept taking small spoonfuls of that. But don't get worried in the hospital if you can't meet the Fluid requirements. Once I got home for some reason it was easier. I LIVED on sugar free ice pops (about every hour)! low sodium beef broth( I felt like I was having pot roast) it was do good! chicken broth, Sf jello and the crystal light to mix it up. I'm still working on getting in enough liquids. I'm on the soft good diet and my liquid intake is still at most 42-48 ounces a day. It is hard but everyday I try to get more. Good luck and one day at a time!!!!

The first week post op was the most difficult for me. I just wanted to say that it too shall pass, so don't panic. Seize this time of low caloric intake with the certainty that you will eventually eat again, regardless of your post op menu. Best of luck!

Don't stress too much over choices. Keep it simple with the basics mentioned above, and rest, sleep, walk, read and keep your mind busy. I spent that time sitting and making menus and reading for my 2nd and 3rd menu phases. So much help for you here, and the best of luck!!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
