Drinking from a straw

Recommended Posts

I am 7 months post op and was wondering if the rule of not drinking from a straw still applies?

I know people who had this that use a straw. Me personally tried it and made me cramp from the extra air and haven't tried since. I was sleeved 10/24/2013

I've been using a straw since day 2 - no issues at all. I will state for the record that my medical team does not prohibit straws. Many do.

I used a straw by accident today. I ordered an iced tea at a restaurant, and it came with a straw. I drank a quarter of it before I realized it. So I took it out, but I have to be honest, I didn't notice any pain or gas from the straw.

Lindzee

your NUT should tell you whats right for YOU

I believe the main issue against the straw is the carbonation situation

since i never drank with a straw, it never bothered me not being allowed to use a straw

i know that there are people here that eventually do use a straw as time goes by if it doesn't bother them

good luck :)

keep up your good work :)

Same with me. Mr Doctor says no straws, ever. When I went to a restaurant by habit I drank from a straw. I was halfway through when I realized it, but I kept going. I refuse to drink out of cups in restaurants without a straw anyway. So that "no-no" will always be broken when I eat out (which is very seldom).

I was also told to never use a straw, but have by accident when eating out, same as seen in other posts; they serve with a straw & it's habit still to drink out of it. I have not had any issues, but I did notice I drink MORE with a straw, which for me is a good thing!

Also, does anyone know if the no straw rule applies to Water bottles that you can refill that have a straw-like drinking opening? I have used those & didn't have any issues. I am only 3 months out, but if I can drink from a straw without any issues I think I can get my Fluid intake up better!

My dr said no straws, but I found it didn't cause any gas issues from too much air. I do use straws.

I was told by my doctor if you don't have issues use them if you do avoid them. I gulp more air without using a straw and drink with a straw 99.9% of the time preop so I will be breaking that rule I bet.

I am almost four weeks post op from having the VSG and I had bought a Water bottle before surgery that had a drinking spout on it that pulls up and down when not in use. I discovered that after I bought it that it had a straw attatched to the drinking spout so I found out that the inner straw was removable. I removed it but to drink out of the cup (as the kids call it 'a sippy cup" Well I made the mistake of thinking that it was safe to use then but the way the liquid comes out of this water bottle is that you have to sort of drink out of the drinking spout like a straw..... I got so sick from all the air in my stomach and kept belching and hiccupping like crazy... it was so uncomfortable.... I'll never drink from any sort of straw ever again. I guess they tell us this for a reason. You have to listen to what your body is telling you. For me, I can't tolerate a straw.

I use straws and don't have issues....guess it depends on the doctor and the individual.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
