I have not had my surgery yet. I had a sleep study done two nights ago where it was discovered that I averaged 12 times an hour where my breathing would stop. My sister, who had gastric bypass a few years ago, told me they would not do the surgery because of this. Has anyone who has had the surgery had sleep apnea? I thought the surgery helped with sleep apnea. I think she is just being a little spiteful, although I have not idea why!

I have sleep apnea. I had it before my surgery. My doctor requires a sleep study for everyone.

Since I do have it my hospital requires me to bring my machine the day of my surgery and will make sure it is utilized.

I know someone else who is having surgery in a few weeks that was also recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. They are not required to bring it with them for their surgery.

I know the doctors use sleep apnea as a justification for the surgery but it appears each case is different whether you have to take it to the hospital or not.

I love my sleep apnea machine; I had no idea how poorly I was sleeping at night until I got it. Hopefully after I lose the weight from my bypass I will no longer need it.

sleep apnea is actually one of the reasons that they WILL do surgery. After you lose weight, you probably won't have it anymore. Most of us have it. THey told me to bring my mask and hose with me to the hospital for after the surgery and the nights.

I am 5 weeks out and I have sleep apnea, I am also a Respiratory Therapist who specializes in obstructive sleep apnea. The others have nailed it, sleep apnea is a reason to do the surgery not stop it. The difference is your RDI (respiratory distress index) is less than 15. This usually means your apnea doesn't require treatment and most insurance companies won't pay for Cpap or Bipap equipment unless RDI exceeds 15. Of course all insurances are different as are all doctors. In any case your apnea appears to be very mild. Good luck with your surgery

I always believed that sleep apnea is one of the co-morbidities listed for WLS.

Good luck xx

It is a co-morbidity that qualifies to have the surgery done.

Obstructive sleep apnea was one of several co-morbidities that made the bariatric surgery medically necessary for me. A c-pap machine was prescribed for me, and it has treated my sleep apnea. It also cured the "roof rattling, raise the dead" snoring that I used to do too! I had my RNY on 12/10/2013. I can now sleep without the c-pap, and not snore at all. I proved this to myself and my wife. She said she didn't hear any snoring out of me the couple of times I've slept with the c-pap recently. But I'm not ready to sleep without it all the time. Maybe later. Maybe not. This I know, almost all of my co-morbidities are completely gone now, since I had the RNY. Some of my co-morbidities, like sleep apnea, and the arthritis in my knees and hips, are MUCH better than before the RNY. So, bariatric surgery has been a good thing for me, all in all.

Although I don't have sleep apnea the nurse at the hospital where I'm having surgery told the support group I'm in that if they had a CPAP machine, they should bring it with them, it was easier then trying to borrow one from respiratory therapy. Maybe some time ago they didn't perform the surgery on apnea patients, but they do now. You should have no problems and in fact in may go away. Best of Luck.

I have sleep apnea and very restless sleep. I was prescribed the CPAP and I didn't know what a good nights sleep was actually like until I started using my machine. Since my original sleeve surgery in September to the hiatal hernia surgery in October to the RNY surgery in December I have now lost 95lbs. I thought I could just quit using the machine that surely with the weight loss my apnea was better. Well I was very wrong. I feel that I do get better more sound sleep still using my machine. However I have called the doctors because here lately I wake up with my mouth like the Sahara desert. I can't talk or even hardly close my mouth shut when I wake up in the morning in fear that the soft tissue is going to split open because it is so dry. I do use the humidification accessory as well and right now I have mine cranked up as high as it will go. They said that I need to have a new study with the weight loss and that I am probably not ready to completely come off of the CPAP but that I need to have my in tidal air flow adjusted down and that will help with the dryness.

I have used a C-PAP machine for the last 10 years. I had RNY surgery October 15 and have lost 90 lbs since then. I called my sleep doc after I lost 50 lbs because my throat was too dry although I used the humidifier part of the machine. He called in an order to the service company to lower the pressure and things were good. I called the same doc last week, after losing an additional 40 lbs, when I once again felt the same dryness. He again called in an order to the service company to lower my air pressure. I have my yearly appt with the doc in May and he suggested I call to have that appt moved up so we can discuss my progress.

I fear my doctor will soon make me do another sleep study, and I probably should after losing 90 lbs. I have another 90 to go before I weight 160, which is the optimal weight for my height.

Good luck to all of you with sleep apnea. I hope to someday not have to use the C-PAP, but who knows. I might just be prone to obstructive sleep apnea and being morbidly obese makes it worse.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea years before surgery. I just had to bring the machine to the hospital.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
