13 yr old getting sleeve. Need recommendations in Mexico

Recommended Posts

It must be so difficult for you and as a parent who has gone through a similar situation with one of my own children....I fully understand the frustration all around....my son was born weighing 13 pounds.....a large baby.. as he grew-his weight waxed and wained.....I sent him to weight loss camps, and therapists.....finally, the pediatrician sent him to an endocrinologist who discovered that he had issues with cortisol levels( adrenal and pituatary problems)....as a young adolescent....it was difficult....all around....he had to be attended to medically first and he also had seen a therapist to deal with weight issues.....difficult and upsetting since he wanted to be like his peers.......for hiim, as per the pediatrician....and the medical issue...surgery was not even an option....we are trying to work things through with the physicians and therapist....he is starting to feel better about himself and his self esteem.....at this point, it is a wait and see......perhaps, there is a bariatric program in your area that manages adolescents....teaching hospitals often do and some are comprehensive....as far as suggesting a surgeon in Mexico....personally, I would not be able to suggest anyone...it is difficult to have a procedure out of the borders of the USA...since there is no recourse..no followup....a surgeons

training and post graduate training is imperitive.......in any country....there is a website for american surgeons called....Healthgrades......you could check on the surgeons training, etc. all the very best.....in your journey.....

I love them at Baja Med in Tijuana Mexico. Dr. Serrano is the most caring, consciencious medical practitioner i have ever encountered. He really has his patients best interest in mind. I had Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Serrano perform my surgery. with a daughter who is over weight and struggling I think you have every right to look at this option. :) I wish you the very best and please let me know how it goes.

Any updates on this story? Made any decisions? You& your daughter have my full support in whatever you decide. I'm not sure a 13 yo can make the proper decisions but I also know a 60 yo who probably can't. I would really want my youth back as a thin person.

I think that its a good option coupled with nutritionist consultations and coaching from you.

Make sure she has the right team in place and the right support group and I would say it would be worth it to consult with a psychologist to see if she is mentally ready for everything it entails.

Dammit say it like i feel. My daughter gouged out a piece of her leg at 14 on rusty gym equipment. I opted not for plastic surgery. When your daughter becomes an adult let HER choose WLS.

this is major surgery and there can be problems later....why not try lap band...few yrs back I was not ready for this drastic surgery...I had a lap band instead. Now after two years I have gone for a sleeve.

all the best.

Just wanted to update you all on our decision. After much thought, prayer and research we decided to go with Dr. Sergio Quinones for both my husband and my daughter. My husband needed the band removed as well as getting the sleeve done. My husband went last Tuesday and his experience was far better than mine and I had mine done at a Bariatric Center of Excellence! I'm starting to think that the scary stories we hear about Mexico are a bunch of crap or at the very least the media only covers the horror stories.

He was picked up at airport, driven to the hospital, had the surgery, stayed 2 nights in a private room, driven to a hotel and driven to the airport the next day. He had no problems and is recovering far quicker than I did.

His experience was great and said he feels 100% about my daughter going. Keep in mind he was totally against going to TJ and thought I had lost my mind.

My daughter has surgery in 2 days. She saw my recovery(I had complications) and she has seen her dads. She is so excited to be able to exercize without the pain that the extra weight causes. She's excited to be healthy and active. I'm grateful for all those concerned and for the well wishes. I will keep you posted on her recovery. P. S. The total for both of them was $9500 for surgery and $600 for us all to fly to San Diego. The meds were $240.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
