What was the reason YOU chose bypass instead of sleeve? For me, Tricare will not pay for the sleeve.

I just today answer this in a different post. For Me, bypass was the perfect choice. It has MADE me stand up and pay the utmost attention to my health and fitness. It demands I change my old ways. It keeps me focused. It reminds me everyday that my health is the most important thing to me. It has treated me so well that I now care about how I look, how I shop for food and clothes. It has given me the confidence to tell people that I need to come first. It gave me the confidence to wear a bathing suit, well you get it. And the best thing of all is now I fit into a airplane seat. I need to fit, so I can fly and see my daughter and my grandchildren. The list is to big. My life is good...oh and I can HIKE if I choose!!...ok ONE regret--> I miss my 8 glasses of wine  I really do! (sniffle-sniffle)..I've been demoted down to one. -_-

oh I always have after thoughts sorry..The main reason I chose it, is what you really want to know isn't it,..Truth be told.. was because in my research bypass seems to have the most horrendous consequences of all the surgeries if you didn't follow its rules, a lot of bad things can happen if you don't keep a balance. I need that, I need to be forced to behave. I need consequences that Im afraid of..but now 4 years later, my fears were all in my head mostly..its not that scary as I lead myself to believe, but at the time its what I needed. Sorry if this doesn't help, but you asked.. ;)

I originally wanted the sleeve process but because of my Barretts, I could not. The sleeve would cause more refluxe and would make my condition worse. And as already stated, I will have to follow the plans after I have the Rouen Y. And for me I need the forced discipline of the gastric surgery to loose weight and change my habits. I am 67 years old and will be 68 when I have my surgery. And I plan on it adding years to my life with the new lifestyle. I just completed my sleep study and go for the results in 2 weeks. Then a final appt. with the cardiac docs and its done. Then the wait for the insurance company approval. Due to an already planned out of the country trip in May, I hope to have a June surgery date.

I went with the bypass surgery because I am Type 2 Diabetic and also had really bad acid reflux. Based on those conditions my surgeon recommended the bypass over other options because it works so well at "fixing" the diabetes and other surgeries could worsen my acid reflux. Almost a year out and I'm very happy with my choice.

My doctor and I talked about all 3 and we both agreed that RNY was the right one for me. I liked the estimated excess weight loss and I liked the idea of dealing with dumping syndrome if I didn't stick to the plan. I am very happy so far that I had RNY.

And that my dear Shmily, is the key!!!..I just read a post that said to relax, give yourself permission to eat things in moderation, relax, don't treat this sugery like a bootcamp. But ya know what..I cant. Im not one of those relaxed foodies, I will tear threw a pantry with a "werewolf' like transformation, if its filled with goodies..Me, Dee, has to be on her toes every minute. I cant apologize for the way I've learned/taught myself to be vigilant. I do a lot of THOUGHT TALK to myself..Im a Mantra-girl..keep repeating what works for me..The Mantra's on this site are so inspiring. I don't even think twice anymore, at a Home/restaurants/work, if I don't have control of what I can eat.. I just choose the lesser of all the evils. So sometimes (good) treats do come into play, and I enjoy them guilt free..one slice of pizza never make ANYONE fat..yep I said it "Fat"..cuz that's what I was.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
