I don't mean to be icky but when everyone talks about post surgery gas are we talking loud? Smelly? Or silent? I'm a teacher so I can't imagine if it's t the first two and going back to school

I believe you are referring to the gas that's in the body post surgery. They pump gas into you during surgery so that they can access the areas they need to easier. After the surgery the gas has to work its way out of your system - often it's manifested in abdominal pain and shoulder pain. The more you walk the better you will feel. I really had no pain after surgery - but I did a lot of walking.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the "direction" you were referring to - but, then again, I had no problems with either. :)

I'm sure everyone is different, but in my case, it wasn't loud or smelly. It was a matter of getting that air out of my stomach post-op. For me, it lasted less than a week. Walking as much as possible helped alleviate the gas.

No matter where the gas is trapped, you only have two exits, so it's gotta work it's way outa one or both of them, with the accompanying sounds and smells.

I think it depends what gas you are referring to. There is some gas pain and pressure from the bowels "waking up" after surgery. But it actually takes time due to the waking process before you can expel that.

However, the gas that is pumped to assist the surgeon is much different. That is CO2 that cannot be removed at the time of surgery. That gas is dissipated through the tissues and through the respiratory process.

Again, I did not have problems with either...but everyone is different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
