Feeling discouraged :/

Recommended Posts

I'm about a week and a half post op. Since day one, eating anything resembling food makes me nauseous. Sometimes it's so bad that not even my zofran will help. The past couple days I've been throwing up 3-4 times a day. Nothing violent, but it's this really gross, thick saliva. I used to get it when I had Lapband as well.

I'm in antibiotics right now due to incision infections. Bactrim, which wrecks my stomach. I haven't pooped since two days post op, and I'm still exhausted all the time. I'm feeling really discouraged right now. I feel like I will never enjoy a normal life again.

How frustrating for you....The only recommendations I can provide come from me being a nurse (not from experience as I am still pre-op). Are you able to take fluids? If so, maybe try getting some Isopure Protein drink from GNC (lots of yummy flavors like grape, fruit punch etc). This is high in Protein which obviously your body needs to loose weight but more importantly for you right now, the protein will aide your body to heal those infected surgical wounds. Also, I don't know if you can take this or not, but a probiotic will help to replace the healthy flora (bacteria) in your intestinal tract and maybe will help ease some of your nausea and possibly help to promote a bowel movement. You can get probiotic naturally from yogurt w/ active cultures (when/if you can tolerate it). I am thinking of you...this must be really tough. Hopefully once you finish that Bactrim you will start to feel better, that stuff is so great to treat the infection but can be really hard to tolerate. Good Luck.

unjury also makes a chicken broth that might go down easier. Warm fluids always sat better for me initially. Peppermint tea, also helps settle your stomach a bit. Good luck.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
