Not ready for mushy foods yet

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 2-7-14. Been on liquids until yesterday. Today I think I over did it. I ate one cup of mushy food every four hours. Now I'm in soooo much pain. Sharp pain in back and side. It's def not gas from surgery. I was scared to start mushy foods. Felt like it was too early but dr told me to start it so I can start my solids soon. Has anyone ever had this pain before? Please help...I've had the pain for 3 hours now. No relief

I am sorry. Just take it easy. I can't give you any good advice. Have you spoken to your surgeon? It sounds like you may have over eaten. A cup of mushy is a lot of food! Best wishes, karen..aka..kll724

I agree with the amount every 4hrs. the food will pass through your pouch in about 20 min's if it hasn't you have eaten more than your pouch can handle. you can still be having pain from surgery. it is really early in your recovery. my suggestion is to back off just a bit in the amount although I don't think the pain you are describing has anything do with your food. perhaps keep your intake at a 1/2cup for now and see if it helps. use a heating pad for the pain. don't forget to use pain medication as well. while you are under during surgery they could be moving you around a bit and make some muscles sore. if the pain increases and /or you start running a fever call your doctor. that is what they are there for. my doctor was so sweet today. when I told her I thought I was filled enough she told me that I can come in anytime just to talk about whatever. it doesn't have to be for a fill. so use your doctor, most of them just want to help you. good luck on a speedy recovery. I hope you feel better soon.

I would't try to force yourself to eat mushy food.I would call the doctor and go on drinkink liquids only.My surgeon advis3d me to never force food through the band.

I hope you recover soon.

Thanks everyone. Feeling much better. I took gas x, hydrocodone, and phenergan. Went to sleep sitting up last night. Today I'm just going to go back to liquids. That pain scared me yesterday. Dr said bc of my liver biopsy as well that I'm still swollen. So no mushy foods for me for awhile.

I don't think it was too soon for mushy foods I just think you were eating too much in one sitting. My nutritionist said 1/4 - 1/2 cup per meal (with 4-6 meals per day), depending on when I feel full, but I shouldn't go over 1/2 cup per meal at this food stage. It doesn't sound like much, but you'd be eating every 2 hours or so instead of every 4 like you mentioned. It's easier on the band to eat small, frequent meals. As you are able to eat more filling foods, you gradually eat less meals per day because the food can sit longer in the pouch. Of course, every doctor has different instructions, and you should follow yours, but I think when you give mushies another go, you should try reducing the amount per meal. Don't be afraid! :)

I think a cup is too much. You should have at least a half cup of food. Yes this will always happen when you overeat. The pain subsides when your food is digested. Best of wishes

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
