Depression before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Anyone else feel like they got depressed before surgery? Maybe because I don't have a date yet and it seems like it's just taking forever to get there.

I am just so sick of it, I just want it to be over so I can get on with my new life.

I know this one. The process can take a long time and that can be frustrating. In hindsight it went by quickly for me though at the time I felt like it dragged on forever -- weird how time and perspective can do that. The good news is you are ready for this new chapter in your life to begin. I so remember the "so let's begin already!" feeling! Don't worry, you are getting there -- you're on your way. I ended up using the time to work with a therapist to really break down my eating triggers. Even though ore-surgery I wasn't usually able to stop my behaviors, it was really good to do the noticing and starting to make adjustments. For instance eating from anxiety or to prep myself for something I didn't want to do (I hate conference calls and would always chow down beforehand). Also I started exercising and that gave me something to step into after surgery. I felt like that really helped with recovery and the start of a new life. Good luck -- you've got this. And don't forget February can be a blah month. Spring is on the way!

I know and this winter has been so bad. I am so beyond tired of it! I keep having to find care for my daughter because of snow days or leave work early. And I'll probably have to again today.

I just want it to stop.

Thanks for your help. I think I've been through so much (two years of fighting the ins co and changing hospitals) and I've dieted and failed so many times I just don't know whys to do with myself.

I did get depressed. It was because I was saying goodbye to my best friend - food.
Some people do and that's normal. You're about to start one heck of a roller coaster ride, but it's so worth it in the end!

I've just never thought of food that way. I think I'm already over grieving certain foods. I feel somewhat better now. I just want to start a new life!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
