I had to change the starting weight on my profile page because I have gone up quite a bit during my six month pre-op phase. I have six months of weigh-ins with my PCP in order to qualify for my surgery. Each month I have gone up because I just keep having food funerals. Thank goodness I only have one more month of weigh-ins. I don't know how much more I can afford to gain.

Don't beat yourself up. I gained 10 pounds from when I had my first surgeon's visit in November to when I saw her again in December. Fortunately I was able to lose it all on the preop diet.

I had to stay on my preop diet for weeks because my surgery date was delayed. But I just can't stay 100% compliant anymore. I have surgery in four days and am just sticking to high Protein and very low carbohydrates. My surgeon told me that my liver should have shrunk enough by now so I'm feeling relieved.

I have had so many food funerals. In a way I'm still having them. I had a huge portion of hamburger last night because I knew that I would not be able to eat beef again for a while. I need to keep telling myself that I'll be able to eat almost everything again eventually, just in smaller amounts.

I'm going to be the resident meanie/devil's advocate, if that's okay. Here's the thing about food funerals... You are focusing a lot of mental energy at the prospect of not being able to eat these foods you love so much anymore and IMO that in and of itself is a waste. You should instead look inward and try to figure out why those foods make you feel the way you do (there is a myriad of physiological and emotional reasons of course) and develop healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with those cravings without giving in to temptation. Because the sleeve can only help you go so far with the avoidance. After a few months post-op the hunger and the cravings come back. For nearly everyone. If you haven't built up a strong mental "toolkit" for keeping yourself accountable every single day you will backslide. It happens. Self control needs to start today, because that is what will get you to goal and keep you there for the future. Food for thought.

Hey your human, your bound to slip up every now and then. On my monthly weigh in visits I also met with my nutritionist, together we set 3 goals and age monitored if I kept it by factoring my fluctuating of weight.

Three months in she called me out...lol. I told her I was following thru but wasn't. Clearly the scale told the truth cause I gained 3-5 lbs a month.

Long story short I had to accept accountability. The 6 month waiting period is designed to prepare you for a lifestyle change. At my 4-6 months weigh in I was down 9 lbs because I followed thru with my goals. For example, Portion Control, chewing 20-30 times before swallowing, drinking Water, exercise, etc.

Utilize this time to prepare. Good luck =).

I did a food funeral too. But when I had to sign that I might have to have an open surgery vs laparoscopy one so I was convinced. I didnt want a long scar.

So food funerals are normal but they put you on the diet to shrink the liver so they can get to the stomach. Don't beat yourself up but do re consider following the program.

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
