Chronic Pain and Surgery- Surgeon Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I am doing my research for the gastric sleeve in Mexico and I only have a few concerns. My most major concern is the pain. I am very sensitive to pain and have a high tolerance to pain medications due to chronic back pain and arthritis. I truly do not see myself getting surgery and taking Tylenol or Aleve a day later. Due to my pain, I take those daily. Does anyone have experience with a doctor giving them something stronger for the pain for a few days after the surgery? Yes, I understand there will be gas pain etc., Can anyone recommend a surgeon that is more understanding of chronic pain?

You are given pain pills...not just Tylenol...and the doctors should be asking questions about your general health to know how to help you.

Thank you ;) I have so much anxiety about being in pain. I have read about some folks who got surgery done and were in pain all night and the doctor wouldnt give them anything. I do not want to go throgh all that. I was hoping someone could tell me their experience with their doctors (or PM me). Are there doctors who are more compassionate? Better bedside manner?

In my hospital, I had a pain pump...but really didn't need it much... the first day, after surgery was probably the worse, but I pumped and slept ;) ... then I had a script for pain meds that we picked up on the way home...so I would think in Mexico you will get pain meds more easily :) LOL...I'm sure someone will post about that as many have had it done there... good luck, it'll be ok!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
