What type of foods and how much in one sitting can you eat 1 year after gastric sleeve surgery?

Recommended Posts

I just had my sleeve done 4 weeks ago. I am on pureed foods and a few bites of pureed meat and I am stuffed. I honestly don't think I will ever make it to vegetables once I am eating a normal meat with meat, vegie, and starch. I am wondering for those of you that have been sleeved and are one year or more out, how much food can you eat at one meal and what type of things do you eat as a meal?

I'm not a year out, I am about 5 months out and I can eat quite a bit actually. Even now.

I'm over a year out. I can eat a lot more than I could in the beginning. I'm in maintenance, so I don't only eat Protein now. I try to get a lot of Fiber in. For dinner I just ate grilled chicken mixed up with Tomato salsa, shredded lettuce, and a small amount of sour cream. It equaled 7 ounces, and I feel like I could easily eat a dessert but I will wait to eat a snack later in the evening (probably a light protein bar). So, that sucks (for me). I wish I had my old restriction back.

I'm six months out and I can eat a hard shell taco, and that's about my limit... Seven ounces seems impossible right now.

I'm around 9 weeks out and can eat about 3oz of soft Protein (chicken, tuna fish, haddock, ground turkey/pork) along with about 1/4cup of veggies (green Beans, or broccoli) and that fills me up really good! At 4 weeks post op, I could only handle about 1oz of the same type of foods listed above. Mind you, I can still have an 8oz Protein shake and that will still fill me up as well!

I am 8 weeks out and I have recently moved from a quarter cup of cottage cheese to a half cup. From half of a container of yogurt to a full container. (And when I started eating these foods, I ate 1-2 tablespoons before I was full.) My NUT told me that after the first six months, most people work up to about a cup of food per meal. At this point, my meals are still pretty small, so they are all protein.) I know I am not very far out, but I thought I'd give you this perspective! Good luck! :)

Depends on food. 19 months post op.

I can only eat 4-5 oz of chicken and 1–2 oz of a veggie like broccoli or red pepper. I can eat a lot of Protein bars, unfortunately, so try not and eat them so much. Same is true of oatmeal and fiber one. They go down fine. I just need to restrict the amount I eat to 1/2 cup. Sometimes I can eat a fair amount of salad and sometimes I can only eat 1-2 bites. I do not eat starches and very little fruit.< /p>

I'm so glad you posted this. I was thinking of posting the same thing. I am 22 days out and on puréed. I can barely eat a few bites. Doesn't matter how slowly I eat or what it is. And even after just a couple of bites it gets a little uncomfortable and I am full the rest of the day or evening.

From what I've read on this site, the restriction does really loosen up after a while. I'm a few months out and can eat quite a bit compared to those early weeks where 2 or 3 bites and I thought I was going to hurl. It's both good and bad to be able to eat so much more now!

Same here. I wish I could just not eat at all but I hate clear Protein Drinks and I know I need it to heal. I may wish for this feeling one day.

Nine months out and the volume I can eat has probably doubled from three months out. Up to probably 6oz of meat and some veggies which seem to be less filling to me so can pack them in after the meat but feel very full at that point for a while.

I'm 9 weeks out and still eat a small amount of food. Start with the meat and if I'm lucky maybe a couple bites of veggies but most of the time it's just the meat. Last night I made hamburger on the George Foreman grill and I barely ate 1/2 dipped in ketchup. Had the other half today for lunch.< /p>

snack tonight will more than likely be a few Peanut Butter crackers and perhaps some SF diced pears.

Any thoughts on Keeblers Peanut Butter Crackers? Seems like a sin but I'm loving those!!!

Are you meeting your Protein goals? My NUT says Protein before everything else. If you're meeting your protein goal and have room, I don't see why a few crackers will hurt. Since I have to get in around 100 grams of protein per day and I'm only 5 weeks out, I don't have room for much else besides meat and Protein shakes :)

Been eating various crackers since not long after the surgery. Not had any issues eating them with Soup or chilli and NUT has always said they are on the diet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
