Anxiety and getting sleeved

Recommended Posts

shelley- you sound so much like myself. I am not taking meds for anxiety but maybe i should, lol. I cant stop obsessing about this surgery . i have been researching this for 2 years now and Im just making myself so tired and so worried. i think part of my issue stems from the fact that I had a lapband 5 years ago and I had problems with it and I needed it to be removed. I think im mostly worried about the sleeve leaking because I have had the previous surgeries and that put me at a higher risk for leaks!!! :(

Shell and Girlie~

As a little bit of a relief to yourself ask your doctor or dietician or nutritionist what their leak percentage has been or was last year. I'm thinking it will help you settle a bit . I got a bit anxious about that and when I asked I was relieved, although I did still have a little anxiety about it but not as much as I would have if I didn't know what my hospitals percentage of leaks was. In two years doing thousands and thousands of surgeries there was one leak total. With a second one that was marked as possible leak. That's very low for two years. I'm thinking you will both be VERY suprised with the minimal pain as I expected ALOT, I mean ALOT, and was shocked to realize there wasn't nearly the pain of imagined, more of a discomfort. Following surgery never hesitate to call your Bariatric Doctors office for any concerns or questions, I def did lol. I was at high risk for infection and complications because I also have Lupus and surprisingly things really worked out great. I am now five months out and lost over 100 pounds SINCE DAY OF SURGERY! Your guys are going to do fantastic! And to be honest as all hell, those that have high stress and anxiety really succeed at this because we tend to follow the rules of the sleeve to the T because we worry about complications. So, we actually benifit from our anxiety :-). You both are going to do fantastic!

I was getting anxiety before my pre op and as I stated my concerns, my dr said, "well maybe it's not the right time....." I was like what?! No!!! I'm getting this!! Lol it literally took her saying that to take me from "oh nervous, anxiety what if!" To " F. That! I'm doing this for sure, I need it and I'm determined to be healthy for me and my family'", so I say ask yourself that question ..... "What if someone said you can't have the surgery ?" Wouldn't you be pissed! Lol I hope this helps you, because I was feeling that way too... Good luck:) prayers for you!

I am feeling your pain. I am 13 days from having the surgery and I am really struggling with anxiety. I have been telling my friends all the possible negatives and they are telling me to stop reading. I am pretty sure I will make it through the process but I will definitely need some positive encouragement to get there. Good luck and stay strong (mentally).

Same here! 12 days and I can't sleep every night! Ugh!

Kyle, I can honestly say that you've helped me more than you may realize. I feel somewhat connected to you through the severity of our anxiety. You put my mind at ease when you explain things the way you do and for that, I truly thank you. I appreciate your support and positive thoughts very much! Thank you!

Hey Shell! :-)

Wanted to say hello and once again see how you were! I myself and doing so so. I have to have another surgery done, and it will be this upcoming Tuesday. Not expected, but needed. Unfortunately I need to have a sleeve revision, so Tuesday it is. Because this was so unplanned and unexpected, my nerves are shot but the Xanex is loving me! Lol. The doctors know the go to town Tuesday with IV Ativan as soon as I get there lol. I've also been assured I will wake up with a lovely little morhpine button lol. I figured I would vent a little instead of letting it build up, building up is never good! How are things with you?

Oh Kyle! I hate to hear this! I'm so sorry you have to, once again, go through surgery. What is the reason for the revision? I'll definitely be sending positive thoughts and prayers your way for a smooth and speedy recovery. You already know you'd better keep me updated!! I'll be worrying about you until I hear back from you! Oh how your anxiety must be going nuts right now! Just plz try to stay calm and don't miss a dose of your meds! I set alarms for mine so I have a consistent level of Ativan in my system at all times. We both know how traumatic attacks can be.

I was under the impression that your sleeve was doing great, what happened? What symptoms did you get?

Oh no! Why the sudden surgery?

They did a full Endoscopy yesterday in the main OR and my stomach is totally twisted and kinked, in order to fix is revision is required. This is VERY UNCOMMON and happens in less then .02 % of sleeve patients. :/ I just happened to be in that lucky percent, ugh

What will they be doing to fix it so that it doesn't happen again?

My symptoms were limited, which is why I had no clue that there was a serious problem. I'm a little more sensative to foods and drinks then I should be, but truthfully I didn't think it was that uncommon for it to happen since your body changes after surgery along with taste buds and so on. My sleeve has been very good to me and the sensativity has increased lately and that's why they did a full Endoscopy. Turns out that my stomach twisted within the last month. When you lose a lot of weight so quickly it can happen and I lost over a hundred pounds in less the five months so that's what they say the cause was. I still have zero regrets, although now my anxiety is killing me lol. I am sure to take my 2mg of Xanex three times a day faithfully!!!

Revision to partial bypass, plus some 'work' :/ I was very much against the bypass originally, no offense to anyone but it just wasn't my idea surgery. They will do the revision and repairing the stomach 'link' and twist

Oh wow! When you say "partial bypass" does that mean they won't need to reroute your small intestine? That's the part that always scared me away from having the bypass.

NO rerouting the small intestine!!! That was the part that totally freaked me out! So I'm a bit relieved on that one. Who knows what they may need to do once in there, so that scares me a bit!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
