Fluids with meals

Recommended Posts

I am one month post op. Have been having hunger issues. I E-mailed my surgeon this morning and he wrote back telling me to drink plenty of liquids with my meals, "not to push the food down", but to help fill up. This seems contradictory to most of what I have read. Has anyone else been told this?

did you talk to your surgeon or the receptionists. i noticed that resposes are different for each wls and since they deal with all of them you may havegiven you the wrong info. i would think the best response would have been to drink more of the liquids that have some Protein in them like, stock or broth, Protein drinks, creamed Soups, refried Beans, yogurt there are just to many foods that are healthy and loaded with Protein that will help with your hunger. you are in bandster hell right now. you need to diet because your band isn't adjusted. but to suggest that drinking a lot of Water to fill you up won't work. you are a month out and can have plenty of different foods to help with that hunger. and between meals drink the Fluid. i disagree with your doctor on this one. but of course you have to do as your doctor suggest. perhaps you need a clarification on this one. let's be realistic here. will Water really help with your hunger. it will just push the food that will help through to fast. and it may cause a pb. write another email. and talk about this.

I CANNOT drink with my meals...the food is passing through my band slowly...adding Water increases the volume instantly....with very bad results!

It is a technique I used to use when I got stuck..sip water and ovefill my pouch...causing it to all come up and out...

I have to say my surgeon would not agree. But my personal experience would. I find drinking before helps me get fuller faster. Not sure why I am not supposed to do that I just know I was told not to 30 min prior and 60 min after. However, I absolutely cannot handle the Fluid after I eat. maybe a sip for clearing my throat or something, but it is more than my stomach can hold. And if something is tight, it definitely doesn't help that situation for me. I was told that drinking after causes the food to move through faster. I just can't handle it, so I have to wait at least 45 min or so.

Nope I do not eat and drink at the same time. 4 years since I have done both. You need to eat some high Protein foods. Cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, Beans of any kind, eat meat now while your not so tight, eggs. All of your choices right now should be high Protein low fat and low carbs. If you eat enough protein you should not be hungry.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
