Today I am 3 weeks post op - questions on food

Recommended Posts

today is the first day I can have something other than the Pro shakes. I chose baby oatmeal for breakfast- blahhhh. I have a few questions

1- how do I make sure I get the Protein I need when the mushy choices are so few (and many not high in protien)?

2- so far in all this... i have not been hungry. I find this kind of depressing honestly. I do want food but mostly for the social aspect. Will I ever be hungry again? I have also NOT had a full feeling. Granted I have only had the shakes and some broth. but when I start eating will I feel full?

3. Has anyone felt a weird feeling after drinking the shakes or eating? My heart kind of pounds and some times I feel weak. It passes but I wonder why this happens and if its abnormal.

Looking forward to hearing back! I could sure use some support!

( have lost 30 pounds so far!!!)

Your Protein shakes are probably still your best bet, although yogurt and cottage cheese were always a Protein boost for me. I never felt #3, but are you sure it isn't just stomach (below your sternum) spasms? That is all part of the recovery period. As fas as #2, I guess it's different for everyone, but yes, I feel full very quickly. Never really had that experience in my pre-sleeved life. And yes, now that I have no swelling, I do get hungry, especially if I haven't eaten in a few hours.

It will get better! Keep fighting the good fight! ;)

I can relate to your questions very much. At 3 weeks out I thought the same thing. 6 weeks was my turning point. I got hungry and wanted real food. Not just Protein Shakes. Once I started eating more solids I started experiencing the full sensation. I had not felt full up until that point though.

As far as getting enough protein..... Put Protein Powder in everything you can or stick with your shakes. Those are the 2 best bang for your buck type ways. Are you on an antacid? I was having extreme acid reflux that sounds a little like what you are describing. Just a guess. I have it so bad that it took 3 different meds to find one that worked and I have to take it twice a day.

Good luck :)

In a NUT class we were told about Beneprotein powder to add. It can be bought on Amazon, you do not cook with it that takes away the effectiveness but instead you add it to what you are eating. I myself haven't tried it, I'm only 2 days post op but I have it ordered.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
