Stomach bug and the band

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has gone through a stomach bug with their band?? I think that I am coming down with something and it scares me. I know that we are not supposed to throw up. I do not know on what to expect.

I am taking anti nasuea meds and on Clear liquids.

That scares me too! Especially since I'm only 8 days post-op. Why are you taking anti-nausua meds? Is it because you thought you were coming down with a bug?

I am taking the Phengren liquid so I do not throw up. So far it is working.

I got a rx of it the day of surgery 1-19-07. This is the first time I have had to use it. I hope that this will be short lived.

Stomach flu scares me to death! I haven't had one yet (knock on wood) and avoid sick people as much as possible. The day one of my kids comes home puking I am calling for anti-nausea meds asap!

I had the stomach flu about 3 months ago.. I was scared to death.. plus I am the type who do whatever it takes not to vomit so I just laid down and hoped it would pass.. no such luck.. I only got sick once and it was just like every other time. My surgeon never said anything about "you shouldn't throw up"..

I was fine and once I did, I felt better..

I had a stomach virus two weeks ago. I did throw up once, after trying VERY hard not to. I had my fill with Dr. K just a few days later and told him what had happened. He told me not to worry, but obviously I don't want to do it to often. (never again in my book!)

I called him for some anti-nausea medicine when I was sick, but he was out of the office for his daughter's wedding. The only thing I had was the anti-nausea suppositories that I had left from after surgery. I used a few and didn't throw up any more. Since I didn't want to keep using those though, I ended up going to the local walk-in clinic and got a prescription for some anti-nausea medicine that dissolves in your mouth. (I had a fever too. I wanted to make sure I didn't have the flu) The Dr. warned me that it was very expensive, and she wasn't kidding. $40.00 for 9 pills, after insurance! Yikes! I ended up not needing them (I used the samples she gave me) so I have them saved for a rainy day.

I have the pills and the suppositories... just in case. I have had the stomach bug two times since banding. One time the phenegren did not even help and I was praying I did not slip. I didn't, thank God. I did drink some ginger ale to help settle things down, and that helped (I know we are not suppose to have it).

Since I got banded, we seem to have had more stomach bugs through my family than in the entire 38 years before!

The first one struck three days after my surgery and I caught it, but the anti nausea medication worked for me. I felt awful, I had fevers and chills and I nearly drove myself insane thinking "do I feel sick?" "am I nauseous" "what was that rumble" to the point where I actually wished I would just throw up and be done with it. But the medication worked.

Since then there's been about 5 more bouts of it, but I've managed to not even catch them by being absolutely ridiculously fanatical about cleanliness and germ containment.

I got sick one day, almost 2 months ago.. I threw up, and gagged almost all day. I was stupid and didn't have any type of anti-nausea medication (believe me, I do now). I ended up so irritated, a few days later, I got a complete defill, because I could only drink... and slowly. I was empty for 2 weeks (gained 8lbs) and just got a small fill a few weeks ago (I was at 1.5, now at 1.2)... the scale hasn't moved in weeks. Needless to say, this has set me back a couple of months... I probably wont see any scale movement until I get back up to the fill level I was at prior to the defill.

It's a pain in the ass. Avoid puking, if for no other reason than you might need a defill, and you'll set yourself back too!! (they checked for slippage also... it was a-ok!)

Poodles---if the ginger ale helps you with nausea (and it does a lot of people) you can get crystalized ginger to eat at most health food stores. I have a banded friend who swears by it for acid reflux----I keep intending to get some to try.

I too keep phenergren on hand. Used it about 2 weeks ago when we got the glorious "going at both ends" kinda bug. Sure was glad to see THAT one go!

My doc gave me Phenegran at the time of surgery. Whenever I have that sloshy feeling coming on, I have a cracker, lay very still and think of my happy place. After some time it seems to pass.

You don't want to throw up as it can cause your band to slip. A little slippage is to be expected over time. My band has moved about a thumb length of the last 16 months but my doc says it is fine. I asked at what point should I be worried and he stated movement the size of a peach would be cause for concern. I love that he talks in term I can understand! :P

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
