Hi Everyone! I'm new to this site and pre-op. My insurance requires a 6 month medically supervised diet. I'm at month 6. I meet the surgeon on March 3rd. Between months 4 and 5, I stopped drinking Diet Coke and lost 21 lbs.

Now, I'm having issues. I'm eating Chobani yogurt, celery, turkey sandwiches on light bread (no mayo), fruit, drinking 72 oz of Water a day...and then I freak out a few times a week. Once, I ate a whole large pizza. I hate binging. I feel gross and ashamed. I haven't gained any of the 21 lbs back. However, is any of this normal? Does it get better after surgery? I'm seeing a therapist about the binging. Help, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

It is normal to Bing before pre open diet. I ate everything that I thought I would be able to eat again. When I started my pre open diet I never once fished on it, didn't want to. After the sleeve I am not really hungry any more, and you can't over eat because your new stomach won't let u .

God bless you! Thank you so much for sharing your story. I was worried I was screwing this up and I haven't even had surgery yet! ;-)

Hey Ready, I too have been trying 'to be good' before my surgery, but like you I've found myself going a little overboard every now and then. The friend who got me into this surgery has told me the same thing as the other poster, binging is all but impossible, and better yet, the surgery really curbed her appetite!

Good luck my friend!

Yes it will curb your appetite but it will also give you time to fix your head. Figure out why you binge in the first place. This is why it is called a journey. gives you time to fix your mind and then the body will follow...

It is the time to take a really good look at who you are and why you gained the weight in the first place and learn what it will take to change this addiction. Learning what your triggers are and finding new ways to cope with emotions and pain without using food as your comfort..

I too had a food funeral before i started pre op and did not cheat when I started it. However I had to learn better eating habits and also found out that there are so many things that you can still eat...Just a lot less....

You've got this kid!!! All the best!

I think it is normal to binge eat before surgery because you think you will never be able to eat again.. But I am 8 weeks post op and I can tell you that once you get that overwhelm feeling of fullness after 4-5 bites.. You won't want anymore... It's hard to throw away or save the rest of the food because before I felt like I had to clean my plate. You Are doing the right thing and you will realize after surgery it's all a mind thing.. Your body will tell you when to stop...

I'm just over two months out and occasionally I miss being able to eat a whole plate of food, and yeah I still get the urge to eat things I shouldn't. The sleeve is the best negative reinforcement tool ever invented for over weight people! I just think about the pain it will cause and the desire to keep off what I've already lost....and all the crazy urges go away! It's ok to eat what you want to now, before you start the pre op diet. You've shown you can stick to a diet by the weight you've already lost. Good luck and keep asking questions! I had the six month pre op waiting period and did so much reading about it thought I was totally prepared......even though I thought I was, nothing can really prepare you for how it will feel. It's something so completely foreign. But you'll get the hang of it real quick. It's a BIG change. Have your support system in place and check in on this forum often! Go get em!

Wow...thanks for responding.

I appreciate you responding. I need to lose ~225 lbs. It's literally horrifying to face the reality of what I've done to my body and what it's going to take to fix this. Thank God for this forum!

When I received my surgery date. I decided what food that I absolutely need to have before my surgery in I my personal experience bing eating before surgery was a no no. Because after my surgery it make it extremely hard to stay with the all liquid diet. Although tonight I let chocolate melt in my mouth with out chewing it (I feel very ashamed). But I also have one more day to go on this phase. Binging before my surgery. Wanted to carry on after my surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
