Do our bodies adapt by 6 months and then stall?

Recommended Posts

It seems to me that I see a LOT of people, not just here, but on previous low-carb weight loss forums, that run into a major, major stall at about 6 months. I know I did when I was lc-ing, and it looks like it's an issue with the lap band too! Hmmmmmmm.

Any theories out there?

I had a little stall about every 20 lbs lost ....which I just came to look at as a time for my body and metabolism to catch up to the new weight. Plus about every 20 lbs I seemed to need a slight fill to regain decent restriction. I did have an actual plateau at about a year (lost maybe 3 lbs in 3 months) but have started losing slowly again.

I seem to stall at those weights that I spent some serious time at on the way up. I think it's just my body adjusting and redistributing it's stores, in order to be more efficient. It's frustrating as heck though! As for low carb, not everyone here is low carb. Many banded folks still eat healthy carbs. I know I take in over 100carbs a day, but they are complex not simple. For the most part I stay away from sugar and baked goods and I too stall. I think it's a normal occurance on any weight loss program.

Terry, how many calories a day do you consume? Do you need another fill? I had to get another fill to jump start me again after 6 months. Good luck.

Hmmm, I guess I am the odd man out. My weight loss didn't really get going good until I was about 6 months out and has been going great ever since. I am sure I will hit a plateau at some point, but I am in no hurry for that.

I dont low carb but as for stalling, I got to about 11 months before hitting my first major plateau. I've lost since then but only 3kg - but I'm now at a normal BMI so I'd expect it to be hard from hereon in.

Its going to take some major shake up to get the rest off - like proper DIET (dirty word round here) and personal training kind of torture.

I have had a major stall (weight wise) since December. I have not lost one single pound on the scales, but my clothes are fitting differently. I am a very slow loser (35 lbs in almost a year), but have gone from a size 16/18 to a 12 and now those are getting big on me. I just put the scales away and go by clothes now.

Got me!

I have occasional stalls every 20 pounds or so. But I notice my body changing shape during those times. I guess our bodies need time to catch up to the changes.

I definitely slowed down, and hit a stall at about 8 months out that I'm still not over. I've lost about 8 - 10 lbs since then, but that all came during a week that I was overfilled.

The same thing happened to me on LC. I stalled about 7 - 9 months out, and the stall lasted about 4 months, and then I lost nearly 20 lbs (scale pounds) during the next 2 weeks.

It's definitely easier to be motivated and do the right things when you're seeing some change in the numbers, but I'm sort of trusting at this point that this will break soon, and loss will begin once again.

4 months huh? Well, I should start losing soon then...lol!

It does get very discouraging, but that's what the band is for...to keep us from going off the deep end. Usually if I were dieting and the weight stalled for more than a few weeks, I would throw in the towel. Now, with the band, I can't.

My big stall hit around the 60 to 70 lbs mark. I sat there for a few months and quickly lost my mind. I hated everyone and everything and assumed that I was done losing weight and really pissed off! Then one day, the scale moved.

I don't think the scale moved because I threw a fit! I think my body had to catch up so to speak. My body was changing shape at that time. My hips came in, my sholders came in and I was able to cross my legs. I guess I needed to pay attention to all the weight loss signs, not just the numbers.

Miper70, my story is the SAME as yours! I had surgery with Ortiz and lost 40 pounds, but since Christmas I have lost nothing. I am NOT giving up, but patience is really being tested.

I saw another doctor this week that told me many patients stall out and it gets much more difficult to lose. I know that exercise really plays a big factor. And we get used to eating with the band and then learn ways of eating a bit more, or the wrong things.

Actually I had little stalls at all my previous long held weights too. Which means that even though I've just got the scales going again, and am only 4 kgs from 75 kilograms, I'll probably sit on 76 for months, aaaargh.

I'm so glad to hear you say this! I have had to get 8 fills in my VG band (now at 10.5ccs) - and have only lost 4 lbs since I was banded in September. So, hopefully I'll start droping real weight soon.

I've figured out that if I don't really up the Protein, I'll loose lots of hair - so it must mean I'm unhealthy - so I'm concentrating on protein, protein, protein. Also am really trying to eliminate any added sugar.

Susan: How come it took you 6 months to start loosing?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
