How can I support my Awesome husband?

Recommended Posts

My dear hubby and I have been married for nearly 20 years, and he is my EVERYTHING!

He had band-to-sleeve revision in mid-November 2013. His goal is to lose 100 lbs. In the eight weeks following surgery, he lost 55 lbs. But in the past 3 weeks, the scale is not moving. I tell him all the time how great he is doing, but I can tell he is starting to get discouraged.

I'm not sure how to best support him during the inevitable 'stalls'. I figure this group can give me the best advice - - so.... what do you recommend?

Offer to help take measurements & remind him that sometimes when it does not show on the scale he very well may be losing inches as his body tries to catch up to the amount of weight he has lost so far. Also kindly remind him that stalls are common but that as long as he stays on track the weight will sbegin to move again & to just be patient. Remind him that this is not a race to the finish line but a life long journey & that we will all get to our goal at our own pace! I hope this is helpful to you & I wish your husband the best success with his sleeve journey! You can also tell him to come on & check us out here @ bariatric pal if he feels he needs more support or encouragement!

That's so awesome how supportive you are, keep going with the encouragement and stay positive, as others have said stalls are common, I think the scale is only part of it, the other part is how you feel and how much better clothes fit. Losing 55lbs is nothing to sneeze at.

@cherbear33 - thanks for mentioning measurements. That is something that he has never done but might be helpful when the scale isn't moving. I just wish i had thought to take his starting measurements!! Snap!

Oh, it is sooooo all about watching the measurements change during stalls...

Don't let him step on the scales. Lots of distraction required.

I was bordering on horrified after a huge stall when I finally measured my waistline. I'd lost 6 inches. I kid you not!

Lots of fun activities to pass the time :)

@dreambig - Thanks for the advice. As he keeps losing weight, there has been lots of 'adult time' ;)

We hid the scale today and agreed to weigh only once a week. I'm more stressed over that than he is. (Since his surgery, I've been losing weight too.)

Our new habits include:

1) splitting Entrees when we eat out

2) keeping lots of fresh fruit around to snack on

3) giving the girl scouts a donation, instead of buying Cookies

I've never been a good cook, but I have tried a few healthy recipes and my kitchen skills are improving :D

Wow kudos to you for being so helpful to your sleeved hubby! I think having nuts and Jerky and deli meat as well as cheese around might help him better than high sugar fruit right now. Id also suggest exercising with him and taking walks. Stalls happen. I'm in one now as well. I get discouraged but also get more upset when my hubby brings it up. I'd say talk about it if he wants to but also be willing to entirely ignore it and congratulate him big time once its over.

Have him increase his calories and Protein for a couple of days. That's what broke my stall.

Thanks to all for the supportive response. Looks like the scale is beginning to move again. After five weeks of no change, he dropped three pounds this week. He increased Proteins and upped his treadmill time. I'm so proud of him!

The journey with him has made me so much more aware of the commitment that it takes to be successful after weight loss surgery. I have respect for each of you and the supportive community that you are creating here. Good Luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
