Batiatric Advantage shakes make me sick :(

Recommended Posts

I'm on Day 4 of of a 14-day pre-op liquid diet where I have to drink 4-5 Bariatric Advantage shakes per day.

The problem is that the shakes make me sick (diarrhea and nausea). It's not just the taste, but the smell and texture too.

Anyone else experience this too? Should I call the doctor's office? Any suggestions?

You should try Premier Protein shakes. You get 30g of Protein 160 calories and almost no sugar or fat. They also taste really good. I almost 8 months post op and can still drink them. They are awesome in coffee!! You can get them at Sam's, costco, BJ's and recently I saw them in 4 packs at Walmart. My surgeon was very happy with my choice. Best of luck to you!!

I just got my two bags of Bariatric Advantage from the Kane Center this past Friday. I am going to assume you may be seeing the same folks since you are in Palatine and I am in Arlington Heights. It's hard to think if these do not taste well and you can't get them down that you paid over $140 for them. I'm drinking them come hell of high Water just on the principle that I paid so much for them.

If you are going through the Kane Center, they gave me a really good print out on making it in various ways using different ingredients. What are you using as your base ingredient, Water, soy or skim milk? If you are tying one, try the others and see what happens. Remember, it's only 15 days. Good luck.

You hit the nail right on the head with the Kane Center.

I've tried drinking them with Water, milk and almond milk. I've tried several recipes on the print out and they have all had the same effect.

Call Donna on Monday and discuss it with her. She may have some tricks for you. I am starting my shakes on Thursday so now I am eating like a man on death row. I'd imagine the diarrhea and nausea may be normal when you dramatically change your diet, I've had that problem in the past on the start of other diets I have had in the past. Your body is compensating for the change in what it is consuming. Once it adjusts it should improve. Again, there is an end-game here and once you have surgery it will be a whole new set of challenges.

How are you preparing the shakes? A shaker, blender? Are you adding any fruit? What flavors do you have?

Can you call your surgeon's office and see if you can use another kind of shake? Mine gave me several options that I can use during pre-op.

I'll definitely give Donna a call.

I have chocolate and vanilla. I have a nutribullet, so that's what I used at first. I'd add fruit and some kind of liquid. Followed several recipes, but they all made me sick. Then I figured since that wasn't really helping it go down, I started using the shaker with either Water or milk. I just chug it now.

I ordered the same exact product but unflavored, with the hope that I can mix it with broth and maybe that would go down better. It should get here on Tuesday.

End game! Got it! Thanks!

I haven't tried this brand, but I did find that one certain brand made me nauseated each and every time I tried it, regardless of flavor or time of day.

In my case it was muscle milk but there was just something about it that didn't agree with me. I can drink other brands fine with no problems. Maybe this one just isn't for you. :)

The surgeon requires that patients use only the BA brand for the preop diet. But I'll call tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions.

Thanks everyone!

I'm also a Kane Center patient (day 4 of my diet) and am experiencing the same thing with the Bariatric Advantage shakes!! They make me feel bloated and nauseous no matter how or what I mix them with. I even tried almond milk, as Donna suggested for a sensitive stomach and it was still bad! I couldn't stand feeling like I was going to throw up all the time. I switched to Premier Protein shakes. They have pretty close to the same nutritional content as the Bariatric Advantage shakes I didn't exactly ask if it was ok though...I started feeling sick the 2nd day at it was a weekend so no one was in the office. I just switched because I felt it was the right choice. I'm interested to see what Donna had to say though if you called?

Hey there Blissful!

I wish I could say that she was helpful, but after asking me if I'd tried various combinations (which I had), she recommended that I add Peanut Butter to my shake.

I told her that I'd try it, but I'm skeptical. I'm pretty sure the product is the problem, not what I'm mixing it with. I'll post an update later tonight.

I had a feeling she wouldn't be very helpful! Lol. Adding Peanut Butter didn't do anything but give me indigestion and peanut butter flavored burps so I agree, it has to be the product! I'm part of a support group through a coworker (also banded) and when I told all of them what was going on they all agreed I should switch brands. They all were on different brands pre-op, so personally, I don't think it makes a difference if we don't use Bariatric Advantage. How are they ever going to know I didn't use it? Lol I know it's terrible to not follow doctor's orders but it seems crazy to keep making myself sick over a brand of Protein shakes! Good luck though. Keep me posted on how you're doing :)

This is random, but my surgery date was originally scheduled for the same day as yours with the same surgeon! So weird haha mine got moved to the 18th because my pulmonologist didn't practice at St. Alexis, only Alexian Brothers, and they can't just give me a different one for whatever reason. Anyways, small world :) best of luck to you!

They did the exact same thing to me. After trying several others my nut told me to try premier ready-to-drink and I use those. Yum

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
