I had my surgery Wednesday feb 5th, I know pain is part of it but when did the pain start going away? I can't cough, laugh, or get comfortable... I have a hard time getting up off the couch on my own. I hate it and being so dependent on my husband right now.

I stopped daytime pain med after 4 days, but continued taking it nights for a couple more. So a week. I could sleep on my side after about 10 days. I have an acre of grass and was mowing my lawn 9 days after surgery (with a self-propelled mower). Everyone is different. Take it easy, follow your docs instructions, and recover at your own pace. Take short walks frequently - it definately helps. You'll feel better soon.

It does seem to be different for each person. I had no pain medicine from end of day two. Never had an injectable pump in hospital either. Was I comfortable at all times....no but it was tolerable and was only hurting for a few seconds when turning from side to side in bed. It appears that certain nerves can be cut or inflamed increasing pain in others. Hang in there.

mizznickie13, getting up and down is a real pain., I had RNY Tuesday and still have significant pain, I think it also has to do with what the MD does inside. I had scar tissue and a hiatal hernia repair and my left side is all bruised. I will not be going to the mall or walking the treadmill for a while. Pushing through the pain is great at the gym but listening to your body after surgery is so important. The stomach has to heal and that can take a month. It will get better, please be as dependent as possible. If you need help you ask for it. If you can get your own stuff, great but if you are too shaky sit down and graciously say thank you. DON'T PUSH IT.

I started weaning myself off pain meds after day 10. But I had my husband still help me quite a bit those first 2 weeks, even at a moderate level the first 6. I was worried doing too much might lead to a hernia. And I have to say the first 7 weeks for me I had a lot of good days and bad. I'd feel fine for part of the day, then feel like I was hit by a truck. Hang in there and take the help and rest while you can get it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
