I am so happy to have found this app! This can be a scary process. I have a great support system but it's good to "hear" from people in my situation. The pre-op part that worries me the most is the liquid diet 10 days beforehand. But I can't wait to begin this new journey!

My date is March 5th too. I'm pretty sure the pre-op diet freaks everyone out but I figure I can do anything for 14 days! Good luck to you! :)

Well tomorrow is the day I get started on my liquid diet. I am so worried that I'm going to be starving and ill. I don't want to be grazing on sugar free Jello and Popsicles all the time. I've got to find something to keep my mind off of the hunger. I've heard that the first 48 hours is the worse. Any suggestions on how to get through it?

Well I'm on day 5 now and I can verify that the first 3 days are the worst. Make sure you drink plenty to stave off dehydration and take Tylenol at the first sign of a headache. I am eating my body weight in Jello and sugar free Popsicles I swear. I also have some of those flavor infused broths by Swanson and that has helped. I cut them with regular chicken broth and it breaks up the monotony of plan broth. A lot of it is in your head too; you just have to keep telling yourself it is totally worth it and believe you can do it. Days 3 and 4 were both soooo much better.

I am having my surgery on March 5th in Mexico.. Getting excited and nervous!! :)

I've been noticing that a lot of people are going to Mexico to have the surgery. Why is that?

How are you doing with your diet?

Well for me it is the only way I can afford it.. It costs too much here and my insurance won't cover it.. I have been on the liquid diet for 2 weeks now and have slipped up a few times. During the day I'm fine but as soon as I get home I'm hungry.. I'm sitting here watching the food network no wonder I'm hungry lol

I'm watching the food network too! That's all I watch. Lol. Thanks for explaining the reason. I have seen where many people are going and I never asked why. I'm blessed that my insurance will cover it. I'm glad there's a place to go to get it done if insurance doesn't though. I'm on day 6 of my 10 day....I've slipped and had meltdowns but learned that I just have to get back on track.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
