10 years out and cannot keep weight on

Recommended Posts

I am 10 years out and have trouble keeping weight on. My gall bladder was removed shortly after weight loss surgery also. I use Protein Shakes and take the Bariatric Vitamins. I rarely feel hunger and when stressed have physical difficulty eating. Doc has checked and there are no surgical reasons for this. They tell me this sometimes happens to people with the bypass surgery. As I was a stress eater prior to surgery this is so weird. Anyone else having a bit too much success with surgery?

While this is soooo not funny..I had to smile a bit..I'm thinking, not many people have this problem..But I will say this..4 years out and I haven't gained more than a pound or 2 on the up side, but on the down side, I have (accidently) dropped down to 110 lbs, it happens when I have to much going on, I'm running myself ragged, and forget to eat, I remember to exercise, but I forget to eat..I think a lot of people on here cant relate to that yet.

I don't get hungry often, so I have to remind myself to eat. Breakfast is NON NEGOTABLE, I eat breakfast no matter what I'm doing or where I'm at. But the rest of the day is a fight to remember meals.

I do want to slow down though, that seems to help, but since I lost the weight, I cant sit still, 'mI constantly doing something..my poor husband, he says we need a intercom in every room so he can just stand in the kitchen and call me on a wall unit..he taken to texting me of my where abouts in the house lol..So I don't know if its the same thing..but I do have to be vigilant about feeding times, or the scale starts to slide downward..I don't want to be a bag of bones!

here comes an after thought..I have them a lot..lol..

There was a moment in time when my PCP told me to back off my cardio and just strength train..Im a treadmill (walker) junkie..it relaxes me, but apparently TO MUCH..my body chem is in high gear and reacts quickly to cardio stimulation..so to much was causing to rapid a weight loss..again, not a prob many people have on this site, so I don't mention it much.

I'm only two years out but have experienced the same challenge for the exact same reason - when I get really busy, eating just isn't at the top of the priority list. I weigh daily and have only once allowed myself to fall below the minimum weight in my "maintenance weight window" of 151 to 156. My surgeon to say nothing of my wife would not be amused if I lose any more. But I have on any number of occasions been on the lower side of that window and made it a goal to regain a few pounds. For reasons I cannot even begin to explain, it is often challenging to add just a couple of pounds. Then other times, it is all too easy to add a couple of pounds that I wasn't looking to add. So I guess as my grandma used to say - "It all comes out in the wash!" Lol!!

wow - thank you. so good not to be alone. Yes for whatever reason I rarely feel hungry anymore. That happened pretty much right after surgery and has never changed. I also find that when stressed food gets stuck while eating and I will throw it up. I was checked out and there is no physical reason for this so it is just stress but it discourages me from eating. Also food has a tendency to make me feel sleepy after I eat so I do not want to eat during the day as it will slow me down. My PCP has suggested weight training with minimal cardio also.So I think I will figure out how to start this. I hate food on the morning but I make sure to have at least 2 Protein shakes in the morning. I have also started drinking more Water, nutritionist's suggestion, and that seems to help with food I do eat.

I am 10 years out and have trouble keeping weight on........ Anyone else having a bit too much success with surgery?

Hi, I'm 11 years out & am having the same problem w/ keeping weight on, in the last 2 months I've lost almost 25 lbs & 4 sizes. My doctors have no clue what's going on so they sent me to several specialists. I went to a new gastric dr who thinks part of it is my Iron levels. He told me that as a bypass patient we can get some Iron from food for about the first 8 years then we can't any longer so we have to get it supplemented (IV iron) he's waiting for blood work to confirm it but I have all the symptoms of it including the urge to always chew ice. Have you ever been checked for your iron? He said even if your basic panel looks ok you may need a more In depth iron count check to make sure.

I'm also going for a scope on July 31st to check my pouch & make sure it's nothing else going on because I'm currently have a problem tolerating any meats the only food I have been able to eat is fish. That's been going on about 3 weeks now thank goodness my girlfriend is a chef or I'd be going out of my mind lol!

I hope that things get better for you soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
