Having Trouble Losing Weight Needed to Qualify for Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

So I'm in a Kaiser program that lasts for six months worth of weekly classes. To move forward after the classes and onto surgery, you need to have lost 10% of you starting weight in the program. I'm about halfway through and have not lost anything. I know there was awhile there where I was participating in food funerals and there are weeks that I do great and drop weight and then it comes right back on. I've recently had a pap smear because I haven't had a period in over two years (this is in part due to birth control I was on, but it should have come back by now). the nurse when I was there told me that my body is clearly not processing anything properly and that could be why I'm having such a hard time. I still have about 3 months to lose about 35 lbs, but I just don't know what to do. Although its not the healthy choice, I'm half tempted to just crash diet in order to get down so that I don't have anything slowing me down. I use a logging website and exercise about three to four times a week and I'm just not getting anywhere. Did anyone else have trouble dropping weight pre surgery? Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm giving myself anxiety worrying about it, which I also know isn't helping either. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!!

did they give you a program to follow for food?

are you pushing Water and Protein?

maybe a Protein liquid diet for a week to jump start you?

I'd call the doctors office for help

Please try not to worry yourself. I too went through the program at Kaiser (Southern California) and the 10% weight loss is what they'd like for you to lose. It will not disqualify you from the program. I was 3 pounds heavier at the end of the Options classes.

When I saw the surgeon he simply said he'd like for me to lose as much weight as possible between then and now. Of course YMMV...I had no underlying health issues other than being morbidly obese.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Kaiser gives you a lot in terms of info that you will need for surgery and aftercare, but my instructor isn't very good in terms of telling us how to diet now. She is also super against Protein shakes except for right after surgery. So when I tell her that I drink Protein Shakes in the morning other wise I will just skip Breakfast,, she frowns on it, but I feel like it is better than eating nothing (or the energy drinks I used to have)

Thank You Blondie...Im may message you later. My sister had her surgery through Kaiser and didn't reach the 10% either, but she was at like 8% so at least she was close. I just don't want to go through all the classes and have them tell me come back when I've lost the weight.

Are you tracking everything you eat? If not something like My Fitness Pal may help

Yes, I track everything through "Lose It" its an app thats pretty similar to My Fitness Pal. This weekend I started using "Map My Walk" to map my walks and challenge my distance.

I did Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch with Protein Snacks such as cheese sticks or low carb and a light high protein dinner. I managed to loose 25 lbs pre-op. I also had trouble loosing weight due to thyroid issues. Good luck!

I joined Weight Watchers and quit eating out and was able to lose 20 pounds easily. I was eating out breakfast and lunch every week day. Just replacing those two meals with healthier options from home made a huge difference. Restaurant foods contain so many hidden calories, even when they say they are healthy. Also on Weight Watchers you have to track your food and that helps, but their app makes it easy.

They should have a registered dietician available to you while you're in the program. Ask about this at your next class.

If not, I'd be more than happy to share the information I was given through Kaiser.

I was told as long as I don't gain weight it's okay, but to try my best for the %10. I hope my coach is a good one, it seems like there are some really good ones and some not good ones. My classes begin April 3, 2014

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
