Hiatal Hernia AFTER sleeve

Recommended Posts

So I have been having a lot of problems with GERD, now more than ever. I have been taking PPIs with no relief, in fact, it's so bad when I sleep, I have a huge spasm and I have acid spewing into my mouth, or worse, into my nose! (That's the most terrible thing!) I went to see my PMD, thinking that I needed an adjustment in my PPI, but she was concerned that it might be something deeper than just reflux... and she's right. I had an upper GI study done and I have a hiatal hernia, which was not there when I had a GI study 4 weeks after surgery. I've done a lot of research and it looks like I might be in for more surgery to correct it, and most people have a Nissen Fundoplication with the hernia repair, but I don't think that's possible after I have had the sleeve.

1) Has anyone had experience with this?

2) What are the outcomes?

3) What's the healing time?

Thanks!

The fundoplication is to correct chronic GERD that doesn't go away with hernia repair. It's not the first step and it only lasts 10 years or so. Hernia surgery is easy. Most of us have a hiatal hernia when we are obese because our fat actually can push up on our abdomen and cause strain. Lots of us have it repaired at surgery. I did and it was no drama. Apparently I have a slight one either still or again, but not enough to have more surgery. My GERD is controlled with the lowest dose of nexium every day. If it gets worse I will have the hernia repaired again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
